Chapter 1 - THE CAMERA ABOVE THE DOOR

Marcus Thorne did not move when the first scream came through the security monitor.

He stood inside the hospital’s private surveillance room with both hands pressed against the edge of a steel desk.

The black tuxedo he had worn to the charity gala suddenly felt like a costume belonging to another man.

On the screen, Khloe lay curled on the marble floor.

Her arms were wrapped around her stomach.

Isabella stood above her in a crimson gown, staring down without regret.

Dr. Adrian Vale, Khloe’s uncle and chairman of St. Catherine’s Medical Center, entered the room behind Marcus.

His white dinner jacket had been thrown over a hospital chair.

The calm expression he normally wore had disappeared.

“Play it from the beginning,” Adrian ordered.

The security technician hesitated.

“Dr. Vale, Mrs. Thorne is still being evaluated.”

“I know exactly where my niece is.”

Adrian’s voice became colder.

“Play the entire recording.”

Marcus turned toward him.

“Adrian, I need to be with Khloe.”

“You had plenty of opportunities to be with her before she ended up on that floor.”

The accusation struck Marcus harder than a fist.

Detective Lena Ortiz stood near the locked door with two uniformed officers.

Isabella had already been taken into custody.

She had continued insisting that Khloe attacked first until one of the officers told her the suite was monitored.

Then she had stopped speaking.

The technician moved the recording back twenty-seven minutes.

The empty suite appeared on the screen.

For several seconds, nothing happened.

Then the door opened.

Marcus entered.

Everyone in the surveillance room looked at him.

Marcus’s jaw tightened.

He remembered the moment.

He had entered the suite because Isabella sent him a message claiming she finally had evidence about Daniel.

He had told himself he was protecting Khloe.

Now, watching the recording, he understood how every secret looked when stripped of its excuses.

Isabella followed him inside.

She was smiling.

“You came,” she said on the recording.

“You said you had Daniel’s ledger,” Marcus replied.

“I said I knew where it was.”

“Then tell me.”

Isabella walked toward the marble table.

She placed one hand on Marcus’s chest.

“You used to speak to me differently.”

“That was before you began threatening my wife.”

“I never threatened her.”

“You sent photographs of Khloe leaving her doctor’s office.”

“I was making certain she was really pregnant.”

Marcus caught Isabella’s wrist and removed her hand from his jacket.

“Stay away from her.”

Isabella laughed softly.

“You do not get to pretend you are a devoted husband now.”

“I am not pretending.”

“Then why have you lied to her every day since she became pregnant?”

Inside the surveillance room, Adrian slowly turned toward Marcus.

Detective Ortiz folded her arms.

Marcus stared at the monitor.

He had known this part would be difficult.

He had not known the microphone above the suite entrance was sensitive enough to capture every word.

On the recording, Marcus stepped closer to Isabella.

“Where is the ledger?”

“Somewhere your mother cannot reach.”

“Helena knows you have it.”

“Helena suspects.”

“If she finds out you contacted me, she will destroy you.”

Isabella’s smile faded.

“She already destroyed me when she chose Khloe.”

Marcus shook his head.

“My marriage has nothing to do with you.”

“It has everything to do with me.”

Isabella moved close enough that her face nearly touched his.

“You were supposed to marry me.”

“That was never going to happen.”

“You let me believe it would.”

“I told you the truth before I met Khloe.”

“You told me what was convenient.”

Isabella suddenly kissed him.

Marcus froze for one terrible second.

Then he pushed her away.

In the surveillance room, Adrian’s fist struck the desk.

Marcus closed his eyes briefly.

The kiss had lasted less than two seconds.

It was still two seconds too long.

On the screen, Marcus wiped his mouth with the back of his hand.

“Do that again and I will have you removed from every Thorne property in the country.”

Isabella’s eyes filled with rage.

“You still think you control the doors.”

“I control this one.”

Marcus removed a black access card from his pocket and placed it on the table.

“Khloe will come here because Elaine told her the suite was private.”

Adrian stepped toward him.

“You arranged for Khloe to enter that room?”

Marcus did not look away from the screen.

“I needed to speak to Isabella without Helena seeing us together.”

“So you used my pregnant niece as cover?”

“No.”

The denial sounded weak even to Marcus.

On the recording, Isabella picked up the access card.

“What do you want me to do?”

“Tell Khloe you have information about Daniel.”

“Why would she listen to me?”

“Because she knows I have been lying.”

The words filled the surveillance room.

Marcus heard Adrian inhale sharply.

Isabella tilted her head on the screen.

“You finally admitted it.”

“I admitted nothing.”

“You just said your wife knows you are lying.”

“She knows I have kept something from her.”

“Something like the fact that her unborn child could control Thorne Meridian?”

Detective Ortiz looked toward Marcus.

Adrian became completely still.

Marcus’s face hardened.

“Do not say that again.”

“Why?”

“Because Khloe cannot learn about the Founders Clause until I know who altered Daniel’s records.”

Isabella walked around him.

“And you still believe you can keep her here until midnight?”

“She must not return to the ballroom.”

“Because of the board announcement?”

“Because Gideon is going to force a vote.”

Isabella picked up the access card.

“You want me to keep your wife occupied while you save your company.”

“I want you to tell her enough to keep her safe.”

“And what happens after midnight?”

“I give Khloe the truth.”

Isabella studied him.

“You said that three months ago.”

“I did not know Helena had access to the clinic then.”

“And now?”

“Now I know my mother has been altering Khloe’s medical files.”

Adrian reached past the technician and paused the recording.

The room fell silent.

He turned toward Marcus with murder in his eyes.

“What did you just say?”

Marcus finally faced him.

“I learned this morning that someone requested copies of Khloe’s psychiatric evaluation.”

“Khloe has never had a psychiatric evaluation.”

“I know.”

“Then why was there a file?”

“Because someone created one.”

Adrian grabbed Marcus by the front of his tuxedo.

The officers moved forward.

Detective Ortiz lifted one hand, signaling them to wait.

“You knew someone was altering her records,” Adrian said.

“I found out hours ago.”

“And you brought her to this hospital without telling me?”

“I was trying to identify who authorized it.”

“My hospital.”

“I did not know how far the corruption reached.”

“You should have come to me.”

“I did not know if I could trust you.”

Adrian released him with a violent shove.

Marcus struck the desk but remained standing.

“You questioned whether you could trust me,” Adrian said.

“While you handed a private access card to the woman who attacked my niece.”

“I did not know Isabella would hurt her.”

“That sentence will not save you.”

“It is not supposed to.”

Marcus looked back at the monitor.

“Continue the recording.”

The technician pressed play.

Marcus left the suite twelve minutes before Khloe entered.

Before walking out, he stopped at the door.

“Do not touch her.”

Isabella leaned against the table.

“You say that as if I am dangerous.”

“I know exactly how dangerous you are.”

“If you knew, you would not leave your wife alone with me.”

Marcus stared at her.

Then he walked out.

The recording continued.

Isabella remained alone in the room.

She opened her purse and removed a small silver device.

She plugged it into the suite’s wall console.

The camera flickered but did not shut off.

The technician leaned toward the screen.

“She tried to disable the system.”

“She only disabled the live indicator,” Adrian said.

“She thought the camera was off.”

Isabella then made a phone call.

The audio was faint, but the technician increased the volume.

A woman answered.

Isabella spoke first.

“He left.”

“What did he tell you?” the woman asked.

Marcus recognized the voice immediately.

His mother.

Helena Thorne.

Isabella walked toward the window.

“He still believes Daniel’s ledger exists.”

“It does exist.”

“Then why have you never found it?”

“Because my eldest son was more careful than I expected.”

Isabella lowered her voice.

“Marcus said Khloe’s child could control the company.”

“He should never have told you that.”

“He did not tell me.”

“He confirmed it by reacting.”

Helena was silent for a moment.

Then her voice returned.

“Khloe must sign the competency waiver tonight.”

“She will never sign it.”

“She will if she believes it is a routine medical authorization.”

“And if she reads it?”

“Then frighten her.”

Isabella looked toward the suite door.

“How far do you want me to go?”

“Far enough that she misses the board announcement.”

“Marcus told me not to touch her.”

“Marcus has spent his entire life confusing guilt with courage.”

Isabella smiled.

“What if the stress causes a medical emergency?”

“Then St. Catherine’s will do what it has already been paid to do.”

Adrian’s face lost all color.

“What does that mean?” Detective Ortiz asked.

Marcus looked at him.

Adrian did not answer.

On the monitor, Helena continued speaking.

“The child must not be born with Khloe in control of her own decisions.”

Isabella’s confidence wavered.

“You said no one would be harmed.”

“I said the situation would be managed.”

“That is not the same thing.”

“It is the only distinction that matters.”

The call ended.

Khloe entered the suite four minutes later.

The recording showed every insult.

Every threat.

Every movement.

When Isabella shoved her, Marcus stepped backward as though the impact had reached through the screen.

When the heel struck Khloe’s side, Adrian turned away.

Detective Ortiz’s expression became hard.

The footage ended with Marcus rushing through the door.

For several moments, no one spoke.

Then a hospital phone rang.

Adrian answered.

He listened without interrupting.

“What happened?” Marcus asked.

Adrian lowered the phone.

“Khloe is stable.”

Marcus released a breath.

“And the baby?”

“The fetal heartbeat has recovered.”

Marcus closed his eyes.

Adrian was not finished.

“She has a partial placental separation.”

Marcus’s relief disappeared.

“What does that mean?”

“It means she could begin hemorrhaging without warning.”

“Can I see her?”

“When she asks for you.”

“She is my wife.”

“And she is my patient.”

Adrian stepped toward the door.

Detective Ortiz stopped him.

“Dr. Vale, before you leave, I need to know what Mrs. Thorne meant about the hospital being paid.”

“I do not know.”

Marcus studied him.

It was the first lie Adrian had told that night.

Marcus recognized it because he had spent months speaking the same language.

The surveillance-room door opened.

Elaine Parker stood outside, shaking.

She held Khloe’s white evening bag in both hands.

“I found this beneath the table,” she said.

Adrian reached for it.

Elaine did not release the bag.

“There is something inside.”

“What?”

“A second phone.”

Marcus frowned.

“Khloe only carries one phone.”

Elaine pulled a small black device from the bag.

The screen was cracked.

A red recording symbol continued flashing.

Khloe had recorded the entire confrontation herself.

Detective Ortiz took the device carefully.

“Why would she do that?”

Marcus stared at the phone.

Because Khloe had known she was walking into a trap.

Because she had entered the suite prepared to collect evidence.

Because she had been keeping secrets too.

The phone screen suddenly lit up with an incoming message.

The sender was listed as UNKNOWN.

The message contained only seven words.

DO NOT TRUST MARCUS.

DANIEL IS STILL ALIVE.
