Chapter 17 - THE HOUSE THAT BURNED WITNESSES

Helena had escaped federal custody.
The arresting agents discovered that one transport officer carried falsified credentials.
The vehicle never reached the detention center.
It entered a private garage beneath Thorne Meridian headquarters.
Helena changed vehicles and disappeared.
Gideon remained in custody.
He refused to speak.
Malcolm Voss vanished.
Celeste Voss held Theo.
Isabella held Emilia.
Or the message was designed to make them believe she did.
Khloe could not leave intensive care.
Evan could not leave the neonatal unit.
Evelyn had just undergone surgery for the gunshot wound.
The demand appeared impossible.
Bring Evelyn to the estate.
One mother for two heirs.
“They want us to bring her anyway,” Daniel said.
Marcus stood beside the hospital map.
“Helena knows Evelyn cannot travel safely.”
“She does not care.”
“She expects us to bring a decoy.”
Daniel looked at him.
“Then she will punish Theo.”
Emilia’s last location placed her near the Thorne estate.
A traffic camera showed Isabella driving.
Celeste sat in the passenger seat.
Emilia and Theo were likely inside the rear compartment.
The estate became the center again.
The house where the nursery burned.
The house where Daniel and Emilia began the drive that erased them.
The house where every family secret had been stored behind wood panels and locked doors.
Khloe looked at Marcus.
“You have to go.”
He shook his head.
“You are in intensive care.”
“Theo is missing.”
“Ortiz’s team can handle the rescue.”
“Helena expects you.”
“She expects all of us.”
Khloe looked toward Evan’s incubator through the glass.
“I am not going anywhere.”
“No.”
Marcus’s voice softened.
“You stay with him.”
“This time, that is not an order.”
Khloe met his eyes.
“No.”
“It is my choice.”
Marcus nodded.
Daniel prepared to go despite Adrian’s objections.
His leg remained weak.
His memory remained incomplete.
He refused to stay.
Emilia was Theo’s mother.
She had also risked her life to expose Helena.
Daniel would not let another person decide he was too damaged to fight.
Evelyn regained consciousness shortly before the team departed.
Khloe entered her room in a wheelchair.
For several seconds, mother and daughter only looked at each other.
Evelyn appeared older than the woman Khloe buried.
The eyes remained the same.
“Blue bird,” Evelyn whispered.
Khloe began crying.
“You were alive.”
“Yes.”
“You let me mourn you.”
“Yes.”
“You watched me marry Marcus.”
“Yes.”
“You knew who my father was.”
“Yes.”
Each answer landed without defense.
Khloe understood the discipline required to hear truth without excuses.
She wished Evelyn had learned it years earlier.
“Why?” Khloe asked.
“Helena discovered I helped Daniel.”
“She poisoned my cancer medication.”
“I was dying.”
“Lucas offered an experimental treatment under another identity.”
“The woman you saw die was a patient with no family who resembled me after surgery.”
Khloe stared at her.
“You used another woman’s death.”
Evelyn’s eyes filled with shame.
“I told myself Helena would stop searching if she believed I was gone.”
“She searched for me instead.”
“I know.”
“You could have warned me.”
“I believed contact would kill you.”
“It almost did anyway.”
“Yes.”
Khloe looked away.
Evelyn reached toward her.
Khloe did not take the hand.
“Did you arrange my embryo transfer?”
“Yes.”
“You violated my consent.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Helena intended to implant your embryo into Isabella.”
“I moved the embryo to your treatment cycle.”
“You could have told me.”
“I was afraid the clinic would discover the change.”
“You chose for me.”
“Yes.”
Evelyn’s voice broke.
“I am sorry.”
Khloe looked at her.
The apology was not enough.
It was still more honest than silence.
“Helena wants you at the estate.”
“I know.”
“You are not going.”
“She may kill Theo.”
“She may kill you.”
“I have hidden while other people paid for my survival.”
Evelyn tried to sit up.
Pain forced her back.
“This ends tonight.”
Khloe’s voice sharpened.
“You do not get to turn dying into redemption.”
Evelyn stared at her.
“Staying alive and answering for what you did will be harder.”
For the first time, Evelyn smiled faintly.
“You are my daughter.”
Khloe felt the words deeply.
Biology had become dangerous.
Motherhood had been stolen, reassigned, forged, and hidden.
Yet this woman remained the mother Khloe loved.
Love did not erase betrayal.
Betrayal did not automatically erase love.
Both could exist.
Khloe still refused to let Evelyn leave.
Ortiz created a digital projection using Evelyn’s image and voice.
A secure armored vehicle transported the equipment toward the estate.
Marcus and Daniel traveled with federal agents through the service tunnel Emilia described.
The storm had moved south.
Rain struck the old stone walls.
Helena’s people had restored power to the mansion.
Every window glowed.
The house looked prepared for a party.
Inside the grand ballroom, a long table stood beneath crystal chandeliers.
Helena sat at one end.
Celeste Voss stood beside Theo’s bassinet.
Malcolm Voss guarded Emilia.
Isabella stood near the staircase with her hands bound.
She had been captured after helping Rachel.
Gideon appeared on a large video screen from federal custody.
Helena had arranged an illegal communication line through his attorney.
Even in detention, the conspiracy continued.
Marcus entered the ballroom through the main doors.
Daniel emerged from the opposite corridor.
Helena looked between her sons.
“Finally.”
Marcus saw Theo.
The child was awake.
Emilia had bruises on her wrists but appeared conscious.
Isabella’s lip was split.
“Release them,” Marcus said.
“Where is Evelyn?”
Marcus pointed toward the screen.
The digital image of Evelyn appeared inside the armored vehicle outside.
Helena smiled.
“You brought a projection.”
“You expected one.”
“I expected Khloe.”
“She gave birth.”
Helena’s expression changed.
“A boy?”
Marcus said nothing.
“She had a boy.”
The hunger in Helena’s face revealed everything.
Not affection.
Possession.
“The child is premature,” Marcus said.
“He may not survive.”
Helena’s eyes hardened.
“Then Theo becomes more important.”
Daniel stepped toward the bassinet.
Malcolm aimed a gun.
Daniel stopped.
“What do you want?” Marcus asked.
“The original trust documents.”
“They are in federal custody.”
“Then you will sign a statement declaring Khloe mentally incompetent.”
“No.”
“You will recognize me as temporary guardian of both children.”
“No.”
“You will restore Gideon as chief executive.”
“No.”
Helena looked at Daniel.
“Your brother has finally learned a new word.”
Daniel kept his eyes on Theo.
Emilia looked toward the floor.
Her right foot moved slightly.
A black chess knight lay beneath the table.
She had placed it there.
Daniel understood.
The estate intercom system still operated through the old walls.
The chess piece likely concealed a transmitter.
Emilia had been recording everything.
Marcus saw Daniel’s gaze and understood as well.
They needed Helena to speak.
“Why Theo?” Marcus asked.
“Because he is the senior heir.”
“You created him from stolen genetic material.”
“I corrected history.”
“You imprisoned his parents.”
“I protected the bloodline.”
“You tried to kill Khloe.”
“She was never meant to control the company.”
“Why?”
“Because she is sentimental.”
Helena’s voice sharpened.
“She would dismantle the divisions that make Thorne Meridian powerful.”
“The medical subsidiaries?”
“The defense contracts?”
“The judges?”
Marcus stepped closer.
“The clinics where you created children?”
Helena looked at him with contempt.
“You think legacy is created through kindness?”
“Legacy is ownership.”
“Your grandfather understood that.”
Daniel spoke.
“Lucian tried to stop you.”
“He became weak.”
“You burned the nursery.”
“I burned evidence.”
“The nanny was inside.”
“She should have left when warned.”
Marcus felt sick.
Helena continued without hesitation.
“Your father discovered the payments.”
“He threatened divorce.”
“So you poisoned him,” Daniel said.
Marcus turned.
Their father had died from a sudden heart condition.
Helena smiled faintly.
“Lucian gave him a weak heart.”
“I only accelerated what nature began.”
The confession traveled through Emilia’s hidden transmitter.
Federal agents outside recorded every word.
Ortiz listened from the hospital command center.
Khloe heard from her bed.
Evelyn heard from recovery.
Helena did not know.
Marcus kept her speaking.
“Did Gideon strike Daniel’s car?”
“Yes.”
“Did you order it?”
“Yes.”
“Did you order Emilia imprisoned?”
“Yes.”
“Did you create Theo?”
“I preserved the proper heir.”
“Did you order Khloe killed?”
Helena looked toward him.
“I ordered the removal of an obstacle.”
That was enough.
Ortiz gave the command.
Federal agents breached the estate.
Explosions struck the side doors.
Malcolm grabbed Theo’s bassinet.
Emilia lunged toward him.
Daniel threw the black knight.
It struck Malcolm’s weapon hand.
Marcus tackled him.
Celeste ran toward the nursery corridor.
Isabella blocked her path.
Celeste struck Isabella.
Isabella fell but grabbed her ankle.
Daniel reached Theo.
Emilia wrapped both arms around the baby.
Helena moved toward the fireplace.
A hidden panel opened.
She disappeared into the service tunnel.
Marcus saw her escape.
He looked toward Theo.
Daniel had the child.
Federal agents controlled the ballroom.
Marcus followed Helena.
The tunnel led toward the east nursery.
Smoke began filling the corridor.
Helena had started another fire.
Marcus entered the nursery.
Flames climbed the old curtains.
Helena stood beside the blackened crib holding a metal case.
“The original ledger,” Marcus said.
She looked at him.
“You could still save the company.”
“You mean save you.”
“I mean save your son’s inheritance.”
“My son does not need this house.”
“He needs the name.”
“No.”
Marcus stepped through the smoke.
“He needs parents who choose him before the name.”
Helena lifted a gun.
“You sound like Daniel.”
“For once.”
She fired.
The bullet struck the wall beside Marcus.
He moved behind the crib.
The fire spread across the floor.
Helena backed toward the sealed east door.
The same door she locked during the first nursery fire.
The mechanism failed.
She pulled harder.
The door remained closed.
Smoke surrounded her.
Marcus could leave through the service tunnel.
He could let the fire become Helena’s final judgment.
For one second, he considered it.
Then he crossed the room.
He broke the door lock with a metal bar.
Helena stared at him.
“Why?”
“Because I will not become you.”
He pulled her into the corridor.
Federal agents reached them.
Helena was placed in handcuffs.
The metal case remained inside the burning nursery.
Daniel appeared near the tunnel entrance.
“The ledger.”
Marcus looked toward the flames.
Without it, many crimes might remain unproven.
Without it, Gideon might escape the largest charges.
Without it, Thorne Meridian’s stolen money might never be recovered.
Marcus started toward the room.
Daniel grabbed him.
“Do not choose the company again.”
Marcus looked at the fire.
Then at his brother.
He stepped away.
The nursery ceiling collapsed.
The ledger disappeared beneath the flames.
At the hospital, Khloe watched the feed end.
Evan’s alarm sounded inside the neonatal room.
A doctor ran toward the incubator.
Khloe pressed against the glass.
“What happened?”
May you like
The doctor looked at her.
“His heart rate is falling.”
