Chapter 4: Emma Finally Speaks

Three weeks later, Emma walked into the prosecutor's office.

The bruises had finally faded.

The fear had not.

Richard waited outside the interview room instead of sitting beside her.

This testimony had to belong to her.

Emma looked at the investigators.

"My husband hit me for the first time six months after our wedding."

She took a slow breath.

"I believed his apologies."

Another breath.

"Then came the threats."

She described every incident.

The broken phone.

The locked bedroom.

The financial control.

The nights she slept in her car.

The mother-in-law who insisted a wife should remain silent.

When she finished, the room remained completely still.

One detective quietly slid a box of tissues across the table.

"You've just given us what we needed."

Emma nodded.

"No."

She managed a small smile.

"I finally gave myself my voice back."

Outside the room, Richard closed his eyes.
