Chapter 2: The Silent Investigation

The celebration continued as if nothing had happened.

Crystal glasses clinked.

A string quartet filled the ballroom with elegant music.

Guests laughed over expensive champagne, completely unaware that the evening had already changed forever.

Richard Hale, Chief Prosecutor for the state and father of the bride, quietly stepped onto the terrace overlooking the gardens. He closed the doors behind him before pulling a secure phone from his jacket.

"Thomas."

The voice on the other end answered immediately.

"Yes, sir."

"I need everything on Daniel Whitmore and the Whitmore family. Financial records. Police reports. Business partners. Offshore accounts. Every complaint that disappeared."

There was only a brief pause.

"Do you have probable cause?"

Richard looked through the glass doors at his daughter.

Emma stood beside her husband, smiling for photographs.

Only he could see the fear hidden beneath the makeup.

"I do now."

Within thirty minutes, investigators from the Major Crimes Division quietly began pulling files that had remained untouched for years.

What they discovered was far worse than Richard had imagined.

Three women had reported domestic abuse involving Daniel.

Each complaint had mysteriously disappeared.

Construction companies connected to Daniel's father had received millions in suspicious government contracts.

Fake charities had laundered money through family-owned foundations.

Judges had accepted expensive vacations.

Police officers had ignored evidence.

The Whitmore empire wasn't simply wealthy.

It was built on corruption.

Richard leaned back in his chair.

"They didn't just hurt my daughter," he whispered.

"They've been hurting people for years."

That night, he signed the warrants.
