Chapter 8 - The Woman Before Me

I had believed I was Trent's first wife because he'd told me he had never found anyone worth marrying.
He called his previous relationships brief mistakes.
Helen said the same thing, always with a performance of motherly regret.
The photograph suggested a different history.
Hannah checked public records and found a prior marriage to a woman named Claire Donovan, dissolved four years before Trent met me.
The divorce had been filed in another county.
I sat with that information for a long time.
It was not simply the fact that he'd lied.
It was how easily the lie had become the foundation of my life.
Alex offered to help find Claire, but Hannah insisted that she be approached with care and that her privacy be respected.
A letter went through an attorney rather than appearing at her workplace or home.
Meanwhile, I began keeping a notebook of what I remembered.
Not only the morning in the kitchen, but the smaller incidents that had taught me to comply: Trent hiding my car keys, Helen criticizing every grocery purchase, Richard asking to review my paycheck, Nicole mocking my calls to friends.
On paper, the events formed a pattern that I had been unable to see while living inside it.
Three days later Claire called Hannah's office.
She agreed to speak to me on a secure video call with an advocate present.
She looked about my age, with dark hair pulled loosely behind her shoulders and the exhausted expression of someone who had rehearsed a painful story many times.
“He told you I was crazy,” she said.
It wasn't a question.
I nodded.
Claire explained that she had left while pregnant after Trent threatened her and that she had later suffered a pregnancy loss unrelated to any proven single cause.
She refused to let either of us turn that grief into a neat explanation.
“What I can tell you,” she said, “is how they treated me.” She described the same kitchen island, the same breakfast demands, and a mother who called humiliation discipline.
My hands shook.
Claire had reported threats to police but had withdrawn before the case moved forward.
She had felt isolated and afraid.
Then she told me the reason for the photograph.
She had mailed it to my hospital after hearing Nicole's public accusations.
“I wanted you to know you weren't the first,” she said.
“And I wanted to say something nobody said to me.
You can get out.” After we ended the call, Hannah received an alert.

Trent's lawyer had filed a motion seeking to discredit Claire before she had even agreed to testify.
