Chapter 11 - The Town Takes Sides

The first news report used the phrase “family dispute,” as though a dispute and a violent assault could be interchangeable.

A photograph of Trent in his business jacket appeared beside an old picture of me smiling at a holiday party.

People who didn't know us began deciding which expression was more believable.

The victim advocate recommended that I avoid the coverage.

Hannah explained that publicity could complicate the investigation and might expose my location.

I agreed not to grant interviews.

But I also refused to let Trent's public-relations version become the only record.

Through counsel, we released a short statement confirming that law enforcement was investigating an alleged assault and asking people not to spread private medical information.

Helen responded by telling a local radio host that I had been welcomed as a daughter until I grew “ungrateful.” Richard claimed he was being targeted because he had served the county faithfully.

Nicole insisted her video was a joke taken out of context.

I thought about her smiling as I cried on the tiles.

No context could turn that smile into kindness.

At a follow-up appointment, Dr.

Ortiz told me that my condition remained stable but that I should report any bleeding, contractions, or change in movement immediately.

I listened more carefully than I had ever listened to anyone.

Every day I remained pregnant felt precious and uncertain.

Alex accompanied me but waited outside when I asked to speak privately with the doctor.

That evening, Mallory contacted Hannah again.

A second member of the group chat had come forward.

He claimed Nicole had offered money to anyone willing to swear the video was edited.

He had saved her messages.

The information went directly to investigators.

Later, I learned Richard had called a former colleague seeking details of the case.

Whether he obtained anything was unclear.

Then Deputy Ellis was placed on administrative leave pending an internal inquiry into an unrelated procedural matter.

Trent's supporters treated the news as proof the investigation was collapsing.

I was beginning to believe them when Detective Chen arrived with a simple question.

“Emma, did you ever authorize a home-equity loan?” I answered no.

She opened her folder.

The application showed a signature in my name.

The stated purpose was renovations for the nursery.

The amount was one hundred and eighty thousand dollars.
