Chapter 18 - The Hearing That Changed Everything

The criminal hearing took place while I was thirty-three weeks pregnant.

I gave testimony by an approved remote arrangement after my doctors submitted medical guidance.

My hands trembled before the camera turned on.

I knew Trent would be watching.

I also knew that the record would contain my words rather than only his.

The prosecutor began with ordinary questions: where I had been sleeping, why I went downstairs, who was in the kitchen.

Then came the walking stick, the pain, the words I heard, and the SOS alert.

I answered without trying to make my fear sound impressive.

When defense counsel questioned my memory of the blackout, I admitted I did not know precisely why the street lost electricity until investigators confirmed the transformer failure.

I had once believed Alex had cut the power.

He had not.

Telling the truth included correcting the details that made my story more dramatic.

The prosecutor played excerpts of Nicole's video.

I kept my eyes on the edge of the table rather than the screen.

I heard Helen's encouragement and Nicole's laughter.

I heard myself begging for my daughter.

Afterward the room was silent.

Claire testified separately about matters relevant to the court's permitted scope.

She did not pretend her history proved every allegation in mine.

She described her own experience and the documents she had kept.

Investigators presented the financial records within the limits the judge allowed.

The proceedings were not a trial, and the judge repeatedly reminded everyone of that.

Yet the pattern was becoming harder to dismiss as a simple domestic argument.

The court ordered the case to proceed and maintained protections under the applicable orders.

Richard's separate financial matter continued.

Nicole faced scrutiny for her own conduct, and the details of any agreement remained unresolved.

When the session ended, Trent leaned toward his lawyer and said something I could not hear.

I no longer needed to know every word.

That night my daughter kicked so hard I laughed.

I put my hand against my stomach and whispered, “We're still here.” Then my phone rang.

It was Dr.

Ortiz's office, calling about new test results and asking me to come in the next morning.

The nurse's careful voice warned me that the final weeks might not unfold as planned.
