Chapter 5: One More Dance

Chapter 5: One More Dance

A year later, Lincoln Elementary held another Father-Daughter Dance.

The restored auditorium glowed even brighter than before.

This time no child stood alone.

Every girl had someone waiting.

Some danced with fathers.

Some with grandfathers.

Some with neighbors.

Some with teachers.

Some with volunteers from William's program.

Near the center of the room stood William Carter.

Beside him was Sophie, wearing a beautiful new blue dress.

As the music began, William smiled.

"Ready to step on my shoes again?"

Sophie laughed.

"I've been practicing."

"I should probably be worried."

They stepped onto the dance floor together.

The audience smiled as the two swayed beneath the same white lights where their lives had first crossed.

When the song ended, Sophie hugged him tightly.

"You know..."

she whispered,

"I don't think you came here to save me."

William looked at her curiously.

"No?"

She shook her head.

"I think Emily sent you here so neither of us would have to be lonely anymore."

William closed his eyes for a moment.

Then he looked toward the ceiling where the tiny white lights shimmered like distant stars.

For the first time in eleven years...

His memories no longer hurt more than they healed.

Sometimes the greatest miracle isn't forgetting the people we lose.

It's finding the courage to open our hearts again.

And in a small school auditorium in Maple Creek, one unexpected dance became the beginning of countless new ones.
