Chapter 2: The Letter Nobody Expected
Chapter 2: The Letter Nobody Expected
Three days later, William returned to his silent mansion.
Fresh flowers decorated every room.
The staff kept everything perfect.
Everything except the silence.
As he walked through the hallway, his housekeeper approached.
"Mr. Carter."
"Yes?"
"A letter arrived for you."
"No return address."
William almost ignored it.
Then he noticed the childish handwriting.
He carefully opened the envelope.
Inside was a single sheet of notebook paper.
Dear Mr. William,
Thank you for dancing with me.
I wasn't sad anymore after that.
Mom says real heroes don't always wear capes.
Sometimes they wear suits.
I hope your daughter would have liked dancing with me too.
Love, Sophie
William stopped breathing.
The letter slipped slightly in his trembling hands.
No one had spoken Emily's name in his home for years.
He walked upstairs into the room he had kept locked since her death.
Emily's bedroom remained exactly as she had left it.
The books.
The stuffed rabbit.
The tiny ballet shoes beside the bed.
William slowly placed Sophie's letter beside Emily's favorite photograph.
For the first time in a decade...
He cried.

Not the desperate tears of unbearable grief.
The quiet tears of a father remembering how love still felt.
