Chapter 3: The Dance Club

The following Monday, William arrived unexpectedly at Lincoln Elementary.

Principal Harris nearly dropped his coffee.

"Mr. Carter?"

"I'd like to ask a favor."

The principal immediately invited him inside.

William placed a folder on the desk.

"I noticed something Friday night."

He paused.

"Not every child had someone to dance with."

The principal sighed.

"Unfortunately... that's true."

William opened the folder.

Inside was a proposal.

He wanted to fund a year-round after-school program called Every Child Has a Partner.

Volunteer teachers...

Senior citizens...

Veterans...

Police officers...

Firefighters...

Local college students...

Anyone willing to spend one afternoon each week helping children dance, read, play games, or simply feel seen.

"No speeches," William added.

"No publicity."

"I don't want children remembering my name."

"I want them remembering that someone showed up."

The program began only six weeks later.

More than eighty volunteers signed up.

Even people who had never danced before wanted to help.

And every Wednesday afternoon, laughter filled the auditorium once again.
