## CHAPTER 4 — THE MAN WHO RAN

Graham Knox reached the staircase before Detective Hale caught him.

He resisted just long enough to make his intentions clear.

The officers forced him against the wall and handcuffed him.

Logan stared at the man who had eaten at his table, protected his family, and carried Noah to safety after a swimming-pool accident.

“Why did you run?”

Knox said nothing.

Hale searched him.

She found a flash drive, two passports, and a small remote control.

The technician examined the remote.

“It’s connected to a deletion system.”

Hale’s expression hardened.

“What would it delete?”

Knox finally spoke.

“Everything.”

The officers escorted him upstairs.

Before leaving, Knox looked at Logan.

“You should have let Vanessa take the blame.”

Logan stepped toward him.

“What does that mean?”

Knox smiled without warmth.

“It means your wife is cruel, but she’s not the reason this started.”

The red room contained more than eleven thousand hours of footage.

Someone had monitored Noah since infancy.

His sleeping patterns.

His reactions to sound.

His fear responses.

His relationship with each adult in the estate.

The files described him as SUBJECT N.

Logan found recordings of himself leaving for business trips.

Each departure was followed by a change in Noah’s treatment.

Vanessa would remove toys, restrict meals, isolate him, or administer the blue liquid.

After every episode, Knox recorded the boy’s response.

This had not been random abuse.

It had been an experiment.

Marina entered the room after putting Noah to sleep.

The moment she saw the files, all color left her face.

“You knew,” Logan said.

She shook her head.

“Not about this.”

“But you knew something.”

Marina’s eyes filled with guilt.

“I knew Claire believed someone was watching Noah.”

Logan stared at her.

“You knew my first wife?”

Marina looked toward the open door.

Detective Hale quietly shut it.

“Yes,” Marina said.

“How?”

“She contacted me two weeks before the crash.”

“Why would Claire contact a housekeeper she had never met?”

Marina met his eyes.

“Because Marina Santos isn’t my real name.”

Logan felt the room grow colder.

“Who are you?”

Before she could answer, every monitor turned black.

Then white letters appeared across all the screens.

YOU OPENED THE WRONG DOOR.

A countdown began beneath the message.

Five minutes.

Four minutes and fifty-nine seconds.

May you like

Four minutes and fifty-eight.
