## CHAPTER 17 — THE BIRTH CERTIFICATES

The Mercer family archive contained two sealed birth certificates.
One for Evelyn Rose Mercer.
One for Claire Elizabeth Ward.
Both girls had been born on the same day.
At the same hospital.
Three minutes apart.
Claire’s parents had supposedly been ordinary teachers from Massachusetts.
But their signatures were forged.
The hospital records showed that Edmund’s wife had delivered twin daughters.
One child was declared dead.
The other was named Evelyn.
Someone had removed the second baby and placed her with another family.
Claire and Evelyn were twins.
Logan struggled to understand the implications.
Claire had married him believing they were unrelated.
Edmund had known the truth.
“He allowed his daughter to marry his son?” Hale asked.
“Claire wasn’t Edmund’s daughter,” Vanessa said.
The room fell silent.
Vanessa explained that Edmund’s wife had used an anonymous donor after years of infertility.
Edmund publicly claimed Evelyn as his child, but privately he considered both girls outsiders.
The second twin was hidden to avoid scandal.
Years later, Claire unknowingly entered Logan’s life.
Edmund recognized her.
Instead of revealing the truth, he studied her.
“Why?” Logan asked.
“Because Claire showed the same memory patterns Evelyn developed after the Facility Seven trials.”
“What trials?”
“Fear-conditioning. Drug resistance. Decision prediction.”
Logan looked sickened.
“They experimented on children?”
Vanessa said nothing.
That silence was enough.
Claire discovered the original research while pregnant with Noah.
She learned Edmund intended to continue the program through Noah.
The boy possessed something the Board considered extremely valuable.
Not money.
Not shares.
A genetic resistance to the drugs they used.
Every time Vanessa increased Noah’s dosage, he recovered faster.
He remembered more.
That was why they needed fear.
The drugs could not fully silence him.
Terror could.
Logan returned to Noah’s room.
His son was drawing again.
The picture showed the train.
Elena inside it.
Evelyn standing beside her.
And another person behind them.
A man with a silver cane.
“Who is that?” Logan asked.
Noah pressed the crayon hard enough to break it.
“Number One.”
“Grandfather?”
Noah shook his head.
“Grandfather is Number Zero.”
A guard entered.
“Mr. Mercer, someone is at the gate.”
“Who?”
The guard looked unsettled.
“Your father.”
Edmund Mercer had supposedly been unable to walk or speak for four years.
But the man waiting outside the estate stood perfectly straight.
May you like
And he was smiling.
