## CHAPTER 1 — THE RED DOOR

The police car disappeared beyond the iron gates.
Logan remained on the front steps, watching the empty road long after the flashing lights were gone.

He should have felt relief.
Instead, he felt as though the ground beneath the Mercer estate had cracked open.
Noah stood beside Marina, holding two of her fingers.
Not Logan’s hand.
Hers.
The truth hurt, but Logan forced himself not to look away from it.
His seven-year-old son trusted the housekeeper more than his own father.
Detective Rachel Hale approached quietly.
“We’ll need formal statements from the staff,” she said. “And from Noah, when the child specialist believes he’s ready.”
Logan nodded.
Noah suddenly tightened his grip on Marina’s hand.
His face had gone pale.
“What is it?” Marina asked softly.
Noah stared at the dark windows of the east wing.
For several seconds, he said nothing.
Then his lips moved.
“The red door.”
Logan froze.
It was only the third complete sentence Noah had spoken in nearly two years.
“What red door?” Logan asked carefully.
Noah looked at him, fear returning to his eyes.
“The one she said wasn’t real.”
Marina crouched.
“Vanessa said that?”
Noah nodded.
“She took me there when everybody was sleeping.”
Detective Hale immediately opened her notebook.
“Where is it, Noah?”
He pointed toward the east wing.
Logan looked at the section of the mansion his father had ordered sealed after a fire seventeen years earlier.
“There aren’t any red doors in that wing,” Logan said.
Noah began to shake.
Marina pulled him gently against her shoulder.
Logan regretted the words immediately.
He had sounded exactly like Vanessa.
Denying.
Correcting.
Making Noah doubt what he remembered.
“I believe you,” Logan said quickly. “We’ll find it.”
Noah looked up.
“She said if I told you, you’d disappear like Mommy Claire.”
Logan’s blood turned cold.
Claire had been Noah’s biological mother.
She had died six years earlier.
And Vanessa had never once spoken her name in front of Noah.
Detective Hale slowly closed her notebook.
“Mr. Mercer,” she said, “I think your wife’s arrest may have opened a much larger investigation.”
From somewhere inside the east wing came a dull metallic sound.
May you like
Like a heavy door closing.
