Chapter 19 - The Point of No Return

I was already reaching for my truck keys when I stopped.
Driving blindly across town wouldn't help Leah.
It would only give somebody another chance to cast me as a violent man.
I called the investigator handling the case and gave her everything I knew.
Then I called Nora.
She was already speaking with Leah's family.
For six hours, we waited while police checked the circumstances.
There was no evidence of forced entry.
No witness had seen an abduction.
I hated the uncertainty more than I can explain.
At dusk, Leah walked into a police station on her own.
She'd gone into hiding after seeing somebody watching her apartment.
She'd turned her phone off and left it behind, afraid it could be tracked.
Her decision had frightened everyone, but she was alive.
The police arranged a safer way for her to communicate and give further evidence.
She also brought something none of us expected.
A handwritten statement from Owen.
He admitted that years earlier he'd assisted in concealing false reports after Sloane threatened his family.
He had refused to sign one critical inspection certificate, then disappeared when the threats escalated.
He claimed that Aaron's unit had been redirected through an exposed route because the promised equipment hadn't arrived.
He didn't claim to know who planned the ambush.
And he didn't ask to be forgiven.
He named the officials and contractors who had changed the records after the fact.
He also described how Price had spent years trying to locate the backup Rourke had given me.
When Price discovered that my marriage was disintegrating, he saw an opening.
He invested in Derek's gym and encouraged him to grow close to Claire.
Then he turned their affair into access to my home, my documents, and my reputation.
That was the design.
But Owen's statement exposed one more betrayal.
He wrote that Claire had been offered money before she ever met Derek at the gym.
The payment came through a consulting arrangement advertised as an opportunity to help with the neighborhood redevelopment.
Nora and I stared at the line.
Claire had insisted she was only manipulated after falling for Derek.
Now there was an earlier payment to explain.
I asked Nora to request the records and let the evidence decide.
That night Claire called and begged to speak to me.
I agreed to a supervised meeting with both attorneys present.
She sat across the table and stared at her hands.
“I thought if I helped them get your files, they'd pay off our debts,” she whispered.
“What debts?”
She swallowed.
“Mine.”
For fourteen years we'd kept what I thought were joint financial records.
Claire had secretly borrowed against investments she never told me about.
She had lost most of the money trying to recover earlier losses.
Price had found out and offered her a way out.
“Derek wasn't the beginning,” I said.
She shook her head.
“No.”
“Then when did you decide to sell me out?”
She started crying.
I waited.

For once, I wasn't going to rescue her from the answer.
