Chapter 11 - The Name on the Manifest

The next morning, the detective assigned to the threats reviewed the voicemail in Nora's office.

We had no reason to assume the caller was truthful.

Nevertheless, the reference to a signed inspection record matched material Rourke remembered from the original inquiry.

He asked to see an old photograph I'd kept in my wallet for years.

It showed seven men standing beside a damaged vehicle under an unforgiving Iraqi sun.

My closest friend, Aaron Vale, stood next to me.

Aaron had been killed during an ambush before our rotation ended.

His widow still sent me a Christmas card each year.

Rourke pointed toward the background.

Behind Aaron, barely visible, stood a contractor in a baseball cap.

“That's Owen Vale,” he said.

Aaron's older brother.

I had met Owen only twice.

He worked in logistics for the same firm later accused of false reporting.

Officially, Owen had died months after Aaron in a convoy fire.

No remains had been positively identified when the death was first reported.

Rourke looked sick.

“I always assumed the later identification resolved it.”

Nora reached for the public records and quickly found inconsistencies between the memorial notice and corporate filings.

Someone using Owen's name had authorized a document in an overseas subsidiary after his reported death.

It might have been fraud.

It might have been someone acting under delegated authority.

But the timing demanded an explanation.

I remembered Aaron telling me his brother wanted out of contracting.

He'd said it as casually as another man might mention the weather.

I also remembered the look on Aaron's face when the shipment he was expecting never arrived.

That missing equipment had forced a change in our route.

The new route had led through the intersection where Aaron was killed.

I had spent fifteen years believing his death belonged to the randomness of war.

Now the old doubt returned, sharper than anything Derek had done to me.

A message arrived from Claire's attorney.

She had withdrawn her public accusations.

She was prepared to testify about the paperwork swap.

Then another message followed from an unknown number.

A current photograph showed a middle-aged man standing at an airport baggage claim.

His beard was gray.

His face was heavier.

But I recognized his eyes immediately.

May you like

Owen Vale was alive.
