Chapter 10 - The Warehouse Deadline

Nora contacted the authorities with the recordings, invoices, and Claire's account.

The investigation expanded beyond the divorce dispute.

We were told not to conduct our own recovery operation.

For someone who'd spent years moving toward danger, waiting on the proper process was harder than I expected.

Rourke reminded me why it mattered.

“You want them charged, not warned.”

I knew he was right.

Maya provided a complete description of the gym's camera system.

The receiving bank preserved records related to the diverted payment.

Northline's compliance team confirmed my actual company credentials had not been used to authorize the change.

Each fact was small.

Together they began taking the story away from Price.

That evening, an online video appeared.

Derek sat beneath a framed photograph of himself holding a championship belt.

He claimed I'd attacked him during a charity exhibition and threatened his employees.

Claire appeared beside him, looking pale and frightened.

“I just want this to end,” she said.

The clip spread quickly.

My supervisor called to warn me that the company was considering termination.

A customer sent me a message calling me a disgrace to veterans.

For one terrible hour, I sat in the motel and wondered whether silence was still protecting me.

Then Nora sent a message.

Do not respond online.

Trust the record.

At midnight, somebody slipped an envelope under my motel door.

Inside was a photograph of me standing beside Rourke outside the diner.

On the back, someone had written:

YOU WERE SUPPOSED TO FORGET RAMADI.

I handed it to the police.

A detective asked whether I could identify the sender.

I couldn't.

But I recognized the photograph's angle.

It had been taken from the parking space where we'd seen a white rental car.

On the nightstand, my phone rang.

An unfamiliar voice said, “Mr. Mercer, I work in records for the old contracting investigation.”

I sat upright.

“The evidence you testified about wasn't the only thing missing.”

“Who is this?”

“Someone who helped bury the report.”

The caller inhaled shakily.

“There's a reason Victor Sloane wants your copy destroyed.”

“What reason?”

“Because the signed inspection record shows who approved the shipment.”

“Who?”

“Someone everyone believed died in Iraq.”

May you like

The call disconnected.
