Chapter 7 - Twenty Minutes

Vance refused to rush a team into a place selected by an unknown sender.

He confirmed the coordinates, established a perimeter, and treated the message as a possible trap.

I wanted to argue.

The thought of Ana alone somewhere made waiting feel cruel.

But impatience had ruined better investigations than ours.

The coordinates led to a church parking lot outside town.

A single delivery van stood under a broken light.

Inside we found a discarded phone, a sealed envelope, and a child's drawing of a blue house.

There was no sign of Ana.

The phone held a recording.

Her voice came through in a whisper.

“Claire, I found the second door.”

A pause.

“I couldn't trust the system after I saw the names.”

A vehicle passed close to her microphone.

Then she spoke quickly.

“They're not stealing supplies to make money.”

My grip tightened.

“They're using empty shipments to move people.”

The recording stopped.

For a moment, nobody in the van spoke.

The fraudulent invoices had been the surface of something darker.

Container numbers linked the supposedly empty shipments to a private detention contractor abroad.

We could not yet tell whether the movements were lawful transports being concealed, unauthorized transfers, or falsified records covering another operation.

That uncertainty mattered.

I would not build a case on the kind of rumor Richard had used against me.

Vance instructed the team to preserve the phone without connecting it to an outside network.

I read Ana's envelope.

In it were three names and a fourth covered by black marker.

Daniel Kessler.

Major Thomas Yates.

Lieutenant General Richard Bradley.

I held the page against the van's dome light.

Under the black ink, pressure marks had left part of a surname.

BRADLEY.

I thought of Tyler, missing since the storage complex.

Then I thought of my mother.

The second door of the blue room had led us to a fourth Bradley.

Someone I had been taught never to ask about.

My phone rang from a blocked number.

A man's voice said, “Claire, your mother promised you wouldn't come looking for me.”

“Who is this?”

He hesitated.

Then he gave the answer that divided my life into before and after.

May you like

“I'm your father.”
