Chapter 10 - The Woman Behind the Glass

The witness was Margaret Vale, a former records clerk now living in a care facility.
She was eighty-one, sharp-eyed, and thoroughly unimpressed by Vance's credentials.
“I asked for Claire,” she told him.
Then she looked at me.
“You have your mother's face when you're angry.”
“I've heard that before.”
“Then you should have listened to her sooner.”
The words stung because they were impossible.
I had been a child when the first records vanished.
Margaret opened a faded binder.
It contained correspondence logs, approval routing slips, and copies of letters Eleanor had sent to an oversight office.
One slip showed that the forged C.B. authorization had been produced by a document technician employed by Halcyon.
Another showed that the technician had reported directly to Major Yates.
“Why didn't you report this?” I asked.
“I did,” Margaret answered.
“Three times.”
She slid out carbon copies of the complaints.
Each was marked RECEIVED.
Each had been closed without investigation.
The closing officer was Daniel Kessler.
The man my mother trusted.
The man whose face someone scratched from the photograph.
The room seemed to tilt.
Kessler had not been a frightened ally.
He had been in a position to bury Eleanor's work.
Margaret watched my reaction.
“Your mother discovered the betrayal too late.”
A medical aide entered to remind her about medication.
Margaret ignored him and reached for my hand.
“There's one more thing.”
She produced an envelope she had kept in a cookbook for nearly two decades.
It held a receipt for a safety deposit box and a letter from Eleanor.
MY DAUGHTER DESERVES THE TRUTH, EVEN IF IT COSTS ME THE NAME BRADLEY.
I could hardly breathe.
Then Margaret said something worse.
“Richard wasn't the person your mother feared most.”
“Who was?”
“The man who promised to protect her.”
Kessler.
As we left, Vance received a message from security.
Daniel Kessler had requested an emergency appointment with investigators.
He was waiting inside the secure facility.
