Chapter 8 - THE ROOM BEHIND THE WALL

We returned to my house with a police officer present while Brian and Melissa collected personal belongings.
Naomi had advised against any attempt to throw them out without proper process, and I intended to follow the law even if my son did not.
Melissa accused me of turning our family into a courtroom.
I told her that evidence mattered when people began inventing the truth.
Brian paced through the hallway, furious that the cards were still blocked.
He stopped before Helen's study.
“Don't go in there,” he said.
It was the wrong thing to say.
After they left, Ruth and I entered the room.
Helen had used it for sewing, correspondence, and the little watercolor paintings she never considered good enough to frame.
A bookshelf stood against the far wall.
I noticed the dust line beneath it had changed.
We called Naomi before touching anything.
With her approval, a locksmith inspected the cabinet and found a hidden compartment behind a removable back panel.
Inside was a paper ledger bound with red thread.
Its first page bore Helen's signature and a date from the year Brian was born.
The ledger recorded payments by Vale Heritage to dozens of contractors, law firms, and individuals.
Some entries were ordinary.
Others were labeled RETENTION, SILENCE, and CONTINGENCY.
My stomach tightened as I recognized several names.
One was a former bank manager whose career had ended in scandal.
Another belonged to a lawyer who had vanished after an investigation into forged property titles.
Beside the last entry, Helen had written one sentence in red ink.
If anything happens to me, follow the land, not the money.
Ruth asked what land she meant.
I turned the page.
There was a hand-drawn map of county parcels and a small circle around an abandoned mill outside town.
Next to the circle was a single word.
CAROLINE.
We photographed every page and returned the ledger to secure custody.
That evening, while I sat alone in Helen's study, I heard a faint mechanical click behind the wall.
I called Ruth over.
The sound came again.
A small camera lens had been hidden inside the decorative molding, pointed toward the desk where I kept my bills.
Someone had been watching me in my own home.
May you like
And a tiny green light showed that the camera was still transmitting.
