Chapter 7 - THE FRIEND WHO KNEW TOO MUCH

Philip proposed meeting at the diner where we used to celebrate the end of tax season.

Naomi objected to a private conversation, so Ruth sat in a booth behind us with her phone face down on the table.

Philip arrived wearing an expensive coat I had never seen before.

He looked at my face as though measuring how much of my life I had already lost.

“Walter, you've always been a decent man.”

“Then don't make me regret trusting you.”

He ordered coffee and talked about loyalty, secrecy, and the dangers of opening old wounds.

After ten minutes, I asked one question.

“What does Vale Heritage own?”

The spoon slipped from his fingers.

He recovered quickly.

“Some old investment interests.”

“Linked to Helen?”

His eyes shifted toward the window.

“Your wife helped manage documents for the original partnership.”

“And my son is trying to take control of them.”

“Brian believes he's entitled to something.”

“Is he?”

Philip said entitlement was complicated.

Then he offered to help me make peace if I agreed to stop investigating the registry and return Brian's financial privileges.

That was the moment I understood this meeting had never been about friendship.

“How much did they promise you?” I asked.

Philip smiled sadly.

“You've become suspicious.”

“I've become accurate.”

He leaned forward.

“Be careful with Helen's notebooks.”

I hadn't told him about the notebooks.

Ruth raised her head behind us.

I asked how he knew they existed.

Philip's face lost its warmth.

“Some things don't belong to you, Walter.”

“They belonged to my wife.”

“Your wife kept records that could destroy people.”

He rose, leaving his coffee untouched.

“Burn the old papers, and Brian will be taken care of.”

I watched him walk into the parking lot.

A dark car pulled beside him.

The passenger window opened.

Melissa was sitting inside.

She handed Philip a thick envelope.

Ruth took a photograph before the car drove away.

An hour later, Naomi told me the clinic listed on Brian's guardianship petition had no physician by the stated name.

The forged medical assessment carried a registration number that belonged to someone else.

That name was Philip Dane.
