Chapter 11 - CAROLINE’S WARNING

Caroline would not tell her story on the courthouse steps.

She insisted on a neutral location, so we met at Naomi's office behind locked doors.

She was in her early forties, with the same stubborn jaw I remembered from the photograph.

Her father had been Daniel Vale, a partner in a land-development venture formed before Helen and I married.

When the venture collapsed, valuable parcels were quietly transferred among shell companies.

Daniel believed the transfers concealed the proceeds of fraud.

He tried to expose them.

Then he died in what the police classified as a highway accident.

Caroline was a child.

Helen, who had worked as a bookkeeper for the partnership, had retained copies of the missing records.

“She protected my mother after my father's death,” Caroline said.

“And she made sure there was evidence if the people involved ever came back.”

I asked why Helen never told me.

“Because the people who threatened her knew you were the person she loved most.”

Caroline spread a map across the desk.

The abandoned mill on Helen's ledger appeared at the center of a network of parcels now worth millions.

A planned redevelopment project had made their titles valuable again.

Whoever controlled the original documents could contest ownership or leverage them for a settlement.

Brian had apparently discovered part of the story while searching Helen's belongings.

Melissa had connected him with Philip.

“Philip didn't invent this,” Caroline warned.

“He inherited it.”

“From whom?”

“Someone who knew your wife when she was young.”

She hesitated, then showed me a photograph of four people standing outside the mill.

Helen was there, smiling shyly.

Daniel stood beside her.

Philip was at the edge of the picture.

The fourth person had scratched his face out with a pen.

On the reverse, Helen had written a date and three initials.

R. E. B.

Those initials meant nothing to me.

Caroline's hands trembled when she explained what had happened the previous night.

Someone had entered her apartment and left a copy of her daughter's school schedule on the kitchen counter.

It was not a threat to her money.

It was a threat to her child.

Naomi contacted the authorities and arranged for Caroline's family to stay somewhere safe.

Before leaving, Caroline put a small brass token in my palm.

“Helen wanted you to have this when the time came.”

One side showed a mill wheel.

The other carried an address and a date.

May you like

The date was tomorrow.
