Chapter 15 - When Vanessa Finally Looked

Vanessa arrived at my house just before dawn.

Her mascara had run, and she was holding an old brown envelope.

"I found this in Dad's home safe," she said.

Inside were statements from Bali Vista Holdings.

The company was registered in her name.

She had signed documents years ago without reading them closely.

Dad had told her it was a vehicle for a future resort project.

Now she understood that the company had received large transfers connected to Harbor Point.

"You should get an attorney immediately," I told her.

"You think I committed a crime?"

"I think your name is on documents you don't understand."

She stared at the papers.

"He told me you wanted to take everything away from me."

"I wanted you at my wedding."

She looked up, and for an instant I saw the sister who used to climb into my bed during thunderstorms.

Then she said the words I'd spent years wanting to hear.

"I was awful to you."

I didn't rush to comfort her.

"Yes, you were."

She started crying.

"I thought if Dad loved me more, I'd never end up feeling as invisible as you."

I looked at her in disbelief.

"You saw how he treated me and thought the answer was to become his favorite?"

She wiped her eyes.

"I know how that sounds."

We sat in silence until the sun came up.

I told her I would not cover up anything she had signed or done.

She said she understood.

She agreed to provide records to her own attorney and cooperate with the independent investigation.

Two days later, Dad learned that Vanessa had stopped taking his calls.

He left her a voicemail calling her ungrateful.

Then he sent me one.

"You turned my own family against me," he said.

"You're just like your grandmother."

I listened to the recording standing in my kitchen.

Grandmother had built a company and spent years defending its employees.

For the first time, being compared to her felt less like an insult and more like an inheritance.

That afternoon, Martin called an emergency board meeting.

"We have enough to act," he said.

But as I reached for my keys, Daniel read a news alert aloud.

Mercer Hospitality's main bank had frozen a critical credit facility pending review.
