Chapter 14 - The Betrayal Nobody Expected

The false signature changed everything.

Nina immediately informed the independent committee and recommended that counsel preserve the record for the appropriate authorities.

I had spent weeks wondering whether Dad was reckless, dishonest, or simply terrified of losing control.

Now we had a document that could not possibly have been signed by the person named on it.

Before the board met, Mom requested a private conversation.

She arrived at Nina's office accompanied by her attorney.

Her hands were clasped so tightly her knuckles had turned white.

"I need to correct something," she said.

She explained that Dad had asked her to sign certain paperwork after Grandmother died.

At the time, he claimed it was a routine estate acknowledgment.

Mom had signed her own name.

Later, she discovered that copies had been altered to resemble Grandmother's authorization.

"Why didn't you tell anyone?" I asked.

"He told me the company would collapse if I did."

I looked at her.

"And you believed him?"

"I wanted to."

She began to cry.

"I believed that if I kept the peace, the girls would be safe."

I thought about Vanessa arriving home from Bali in tears because her holiday had been ruined.

I thought about myself sitting alone with two ivory place cards the night before my wedding.

"We were never safe from the consequences," I said.

Mom accepted that without arguing.

Then she revealed the part I hadn't anticipated.

My father had never intended Vanessa to become chief executive.

He had promised her the title to keep her loyal, while privately negotiating to sell control to Adrian Cole.

Vanessa would receive a cash payment and a ceremonial advisory role.

The actual operating authority would pass to Cole.

"Does she know?" I asked.

Mom shook her head.

For the first time, I felt something other than anger toward my sister.

She had been cruel to me, but Dad was preparing to discard her, too.

That afternoon, I told Vanessa what Mom had revealed.

She accused me of lying.

I handed her the relevant agreement supplied to the committee.

She read the page containing her name.

Then she whispered, "He promised me the company."

For a long time she didn't move.

Finally she looked up.

"What else has he lied about?"
