Chapter 12 - The Accusation

The lawsuit was filed in probate court, not the court that governed Mercer Hospitality.

Dad was challenging the codicil on the grounds of undue influence and alleged incapacity.

His complaint painted me as a calculating attorney who had exploited an aging woman.

He claimed I had isolated Grandmother from him.

He claimed I had threatened to withhold care.

He even claimed the wedding dispute had been staged to build public sympathy.

I read the document without speaking.

Then I went into the bathroom and was sick.

Daniel sat beside me on the tile floor.

"None of that is true," he said.

"He knows."

"Then we'll show it."

Samuel assembled medical records, witnesses, and the estate planning timeline through proper legal process.

Grandmother had met privately with her attorney.

An independent physician had evaluated her decision-making capacity.

The witnesses described her as fully aware of the effect of the transfer.

Those facts mattered more than my father's accusations.

But lawsuits can still harm people long before a judge decides them.

Dad's legal team leaked dramatic excerpts to the press.

Business partners called for reassurance.

A lender requested additional disclosures.

Employees began asking whether they would still have jobs next month.

I wanted to scream at Dad for risking their livelihoods just to punish me.

Nina reminded me not to retaliate.

"Stay with evidence," she said.

"Every time."

At the preliminary hearing, Dad sat across the aisle from me.

He wore the dark suit he had planned to wear to my wedding.

The realization hurt more than I expected.

He had owned that suit.

He had been ready.

He simply chose not to come.

After the hearing, he approached Daniel.

"You could have stopped all this," he said.

Daniel stepped between us.

"You could have attended your daughter's wedding."

Dad's jaw hardened.

"You'll regret marrying into this mess."

Daniel took my hand.

"I didn't marry into your mess," he said.

"I married Claire."

That evening, Nina called with a development.

Adrian Cole had moved to acquire the distressed Harbor Point debt.

If he succeeded, he could threaten the project even without buying Mercer Hospitality.

And the closing was scheduled for Friday.
