Chapter 4 — A New Beginning

Six months later...

Lily ran laughing across the gardens of Harrison Manor.

No fear.

No trembling.

No apologies for existing.

Mr. Harrison watched proudly from the porch.

Every Saturday, they planted flowers together.

Every Sunday, they baked cookies.

Every night...

He reminded her of the words she deserved to hear.

"You are loved."

"You are enough."

"You belong."

As for me...

I finalized my divorce without contest.

Daniel didn't fight.

He knew he had already lost.

Margaret tried contacting us dozens of times.

Every letter came back unopened.

Some wounds deserve distance...

Not forgiveness.

One spring afternoon, Lily climbed onto her grandfather's lap.

"Grandpa?"

"Yes, sweetheart?"

"Why did Mommy smile when Daddy slapped her?"

He looked toward me.

I answered before he could.

"Because that was the moment I stopped being afraid."

Lily thought quietly.

Then smiled.

"I'm glad."

"So am I."

I kissed her forehead.

That wedding was supposed to celebrate the beginning of one family.

Instead...

It revealed the end of a broken one.

And the beginning of the family my daughter always deserved.

Sometimes...

The greatest revenge isn't making people suffer.

It's building a life so full of love...

That the people who hurt you are no longer part of it.

The End.
