Chapter 2 — The Phone Call That Changed Everything

The ballroom remained frozen.
No one dared speak.
My daughter buried her face against my dress, still trembling beneath the mashed potatoes and gravy soaking through the fabric.
I gently wiped her cheeks.
"It's okay, sweetheart."
Then I ended the call.
Margaret laughed.
"Oh, are you calling your little friends?"
Daniel rubbed his temples.
"For once in your life, stop making scenes."
I looked at him.
The red mark from his slap still burned across my cheek.
"No," I answered quietly.
"I'm finally ending one."
Exactly twelve minutes later...
The ballroom doors opened.
Three black luxury SUVs stopped outside.
Six men in dark suits entered first.
Behind them walked an elderly gentleman with silver hair and a polished cane.

His eyes searched the room...
Until they landed on my daughter.
He hurried forward faster than anyone expected.

The old man slowly stood.
Then turned toward me.
"I'm sorry it took me eight years to find you."
Daniel blinked.

Mr. Harrison nodded.
"After my son died overseas, I searched everywhere for his wife and child."
Silence.
He looked directly at Lily.
"This little girl..."
"...is my only granddaughter."
Daniel felt the blood drain from his face.
"What?"
I reached into my purse again.
This time...
I pulled out a sealed DNA report.
"I never told anyone."
"Not even you."
His hands shook.
"You mean..."
I nodded.
"You were never Lily's father."
Daniel stumbled backward.
"You lied to me?"
"No."
"You never asked."
"You assumed."
His entire world shattered.
Because the child he had spent eight years neglecting...
Had never belonged to him.
And the family he chose over her...
Had just insulted the only heir to a mu
