Chapter 3 — The Empire Turns Its Back

Margaret burst into laughter.

"This is ridiculous!"

"You're making everything up."

Mr. Harrison calmly handed one document to his attorney.

The attorney projected several files onto the ballroom screen.

Marriage certificate.

Military records.

DNA test.

Birth certificate.

Every document was authentic.

Every date matched.

Every lie collapsed.

Guests gasped.

One investor slowly stood.

Then another.

One by one...

Business partners quietly walked away from Daniel.

Phones began vibrating.

Board members.

Shareholders.

Corporate lawyers.

Within minutes...

Daniel received seven calls.

He answered the first.

His expression collapsed.

"Our contract..."

"...has been terminated."

Another call.

"The board requests your immediate resignation."

Another.

"The bank has frozen the acquisition."

Margaret grabbed his arm.

"Say something!"

Daniel couldn't.

His company depended almost entirely on Harrison Holdings.

Without them...

Everything disappeared.

She turned toward Mr. Harrison.

"We can explain."

He looked at Lily's stained dress.

Then at the handprint still visible on my cheek.

"There is nothing left to explain."

He faced every guest.

"I will never invest another dollar into any company associated with these people."

The ballroom erupted.

Some guests quietly left.

Others avoided eye contact with Margaret completely.

Within twenty minutes...

Their perfect social circle no longer existed.

Daniel slowly walked toward me.

Tears filled his eyes.

"I made a mistake."

I smiled sadly.

"No."

"You made a choice."

"And you made it in front of our daughter."

He reached for Lily.

She hid behind me.

For the first time...

He understood exactly what he had destroyed.

Not a marriage.

A little girl's trust.

Something money could never buy back.
