Chapter 4: A Father's Greatest Failure

The police arrived before dessert was served.

Not because I called them.

Because Richard already had.

Two detectives quietly approached Margaret.

"Mrs. Whitmore."

"You'll need to come with us."

She looked desperately toward Daniel.

"Tell them!"

"Help me!"

Daniel didn't move.

He couldn't.

The woman he had defended his entire life had destroyed everything.

As officers escorted Margaret through the ballroom, guests silently moved aside.

Nobody applauded.

Nobody celebrated.

They simply watched.

My daughter quietly asked,

"Mom..."

"Is Grandma angry because of me?"

I immediately knelt in front of her.

"No, sweetheart."

"This was never your fault."

"You did absolutely nothing wrong."

She looked down at the stained dress.

"But she said I was trash."

I gently wiped dried gravy from her sleeve.

"Listen to me."

"Trash is something people throw away."

"I crossed this entire room because losing you has never been an option."

"You are loved."

"You are precious."

"You always will be."

For the first time since the nightmare began...

She smiled.

May you like

Just a little.

But it was enough.
