Chapter 15 - THE NOTARY SPEAKS

The notary's attorney contacted investigators before anyone in my circle attempted to confront him.

I learned only what officials were prepared to confirm.

Martin Keene had acknowledged performing a notarization without properly witnessing the purported signer.

He disputed knowing the full purpose of the documents.

The investigation was continuing.

That acknowledgment did not prove every person in the family had participated in every part of the plan.

But it destroyed the story that I had simply forgotten what I'd signed.

David showed me a certified record indicating the notarial act was carried out in Nashville on the afternoon I was in Memphis.

He also asked my clients to preserve their timestamped meeting materials.

I remembered the first design board I'd presented that day.

A hotel lobby with polished concrete, soft green walls, and a long wooden reception desk.

It seemed absurd that the color of a wall might become part of the evidence that I hadn't been in another city.

But that was what the timestamped meeting showed.

On Friday evening, Brenda left three voicemails.

In the first, she demanded that I withdraw my complaint.

In the second, she said I was destroying Chloe's marriage.

In the third, she cried.

She said her husband's health was failing and that she could not bear more stress.

For a moment, guilt moved through me like a familiar reflex.

Then I listened again.

Not once did she ask about my injuries or whether I'd lost access to my accounts.

Her pain was real to her, perhaps.

But so was mine.

I forwarded the messages and set the phone down.

At six, Luke arrived outside Maya's building and asked the doorman to call me.

I stayed upstairs.

He waited in his car for forty minutes before leaving.

Later, he wrote that he had come to apologize.

I wanted to believe him.

I also knew an apology made in a parking lot wouldn't answer a document with my forged signature.

The next morning, David informed me that the authorities had obtained information relevant to the bank application.

He would not speculate about charges or timing.

That afternoon, Oscar's company announced it was suspending operations pending a financial review.

Chloe deleted her vacation-home photographs.

Brenda stopped leaving messages.

And Luke finally sent a text without a demand.

“I have something of your mother's,” he wrote.

May you like

“It's the reason I need to see you.”
