Chapter 12 - TUESDAY AT TWO

David did not want us staging a dramatic confrontation.
Instead, he arranged a formal meeting with the bank's fraud team and told the family that property matters could be discussed there, with counsel present.
I agreed to attend only if the bank and investigators believed the meeting was appropriate.
The bank confirmed that no unauthorized transfer would be processed during it.
Luke immediately interpreted the invitation as surrender.
“Finally,” he texted.
“Bring the keys.”
Brenda arrived at two wearing pearl earrings and an expression of practiced outrage.
Chloe came behind her, checking her phone.
Oscar sat near the end of the table.
Luke did not look at me until he had taken his seat.
“Can we just finish this?” he asked.
Brenda turned to me.
“An apology first.”
I set both hands on the table.
The bandage on my wrist was still visible.
“No.”
Chloe scoffed.
“All this because of dishes.”
“No,” I said.
“Because someone put my name on a two-million-dollar loan.”
Oscar's phone slipped against his knee.
Luke looked toward David.
“I thought this was supposed to be a private discussion.”
David answered calmly.
“It's a discussion about Hannah's property and a disputed financial application.”
Priya placed a copy of the unauthorized form in front of them.
She asked whether anyone had independent information that could explain how it was submitted.
Brenda said she knew nothing about bank paperwork.
Oscar said his company had been exploring legitimate investments.
Chloe claimed I had offered to help her family months earlier.
Then Luke said the sentence I had feared.
“Hannah agreed to it in principle.”
I looked at him.
“When?”
“At home.”
“What did I say?”
He spread his hands.
“You said family comes first.”
“That isn't consent to pledge my apartment as collateral.”
He knew it.
His face changed because he knew it.
Priya requested that each person provide any documents supporting their assertions.
Oscar produced a folder.
Inside was a page signed with my name and a date from the previous month.
I recognized the paper.
It was a blank sample signature page from a design contract template.
The lower portion had been cropped away.
For several seconds, I could hear only the ventilation system.
Then David asked Oscar who had assembled the document.
Oscar glanced at Luke.
May you like
And Luke, for the first time, glanced at his mother.
