Chapter 9 - The Storage Unit

The receipt listed a facility twenty minutes from the house and a unit paid six months in advance.

It also listed an email address resembling mine with one letter omitted.

Daniel confirmed the payment had come from Gavin's company.

Mara contacted the facility, explained the suspected identity misuse, and asked for preservation of access records.

I wanted to drive there and open every door until I found the box.

Instead, I waited while proper access was established.

Waiting was harder than any confrontation I remembered.

All my life I had learned to react instantly to Gavin's moods.

Now every careful step felt like doing nothing.

When the facility released video through the investigation, I saw Gavin entering with Brenda and Celia Voss.

They carried cardboard cartons from my house.

One carton bore the handwriting I had used to label my aunt's Christmas ornaments.

The footage shook me more than their insults.

They had taken pieces of my history while I was sleeping beside Gavin.

An inventory later confirmed that the unit contained furniture, framed photographs, a damaged ledger, and several empty archival boxes.

The metal document box was absent.

But tucked behind an old mirror was a sealed envelope addressed to me by my aunt.

Mara asked whether I wanted to read it privately.

I carried it to Naomi's kitchen table and opened it with a butter knife.

My aunt wrote about the first time she had stood up to Philip Voss.

She said he assumed an older woman alone would sign whatever frightened her enough.

She had refused.

At the bottom she added that the house was meant to give me options, not obligations.

If anyone ever made me afraid inside it, I was to remember that walls were replaceable, but I was not.

I cried for the first time since leaving Gavin.

Not because I missed him.

Because my aunt had given me a home and I had mistaken enduring pain inside it for protecting her gift.

Then I reached the envelope's final page.

A separate sheet listed the metal box's serial number.

Below it was a single name.

Brenda Hartley.
