Chapter 18 - The Last Transfer

The transaction was a payment instruction, not proof that money had actually moved.

It directed funds from a holding account toward a purchase option on my house.

The buyer was Hearthstone Asset Recovery.

My signature appeared on an attached authorization.

I had been sleeping at Naomi's when the document was dated.

Gavin had attempted to sell an interest he did not own.

Mara explained that a fraudulent paper could still cause expensive trouble even if it never transferred title.

The title company had flagged the discrepancy before closing.

That safeguard, combined with the preserved records, gave us a clearer picture of the attempted scheme.

Gavin had planned to use the house as a solution to financial problems he had hidden from me.

Brenda had presented the old dispute as a family debt.

Philip Voss had offered a buyer ready to profit from a forced sale or manufactured renovation crisis.

The plan depended on convincing me that I had no choice.

I thought of Gavin telling me I was finished if I walked out.

He had been saying it because his plan needed me to believe it.

Mara filed additional claims and coordinated with the professionals handling the financial records.

The civil and potential criminal questions would move at different speeds.

I stopped asking when everything would be over.

Instead I asked what decisions were mine to make today.

One was whether to seek divorce without negotiating away my safety.

Another was whether to return to Hawthorne Lane when the house could be secured.

I told Mara I wanted both.

Brenda sent one final message through Gavin's attorney claiming she had only acted to protect her son.

I wanted to answer that protecting a son never required threatening his wife.

Mara advised that silence was the better response.

That evening a courier delivered the papers Gavin had submitted in the property dispute.

Among the exhibits was a family photograph taken at our first Thanksgiving.

I was smiling in the doorway, believing we were happy.

On the back someone had written a date.

Below the date were two words in Brenda's handwriting.
