Chapter 14 - The Blue Ledger

The photograph had been taken recently.
A digital clock behind the box showed the date of the alleged emergency.
Gavin had known where it was while he begged me to save his mother.
The blue ledger appeared to contain account numbers and names.
Mara forwarded the image to Ruiz, and Daniel compared the visible entries to older company records.
One name stood out: Hearthstone Asset Recovery.
The same entity paying Celia Voss.
I asked what that meant.
Daniel said the ledger might document a decades-old web of renovation invoices and settlements, but a photograph was too incomplete to establish the full story.
The answer frustrated me, yet I appreciated it.
I had lived with a man who treated certainty as something he could manufacture through volume.
I did not want to become like him.
At the next civil hearing, the judge heard arguments about temporary occupancy, preservation of the property, and disputed access to records.
My title was not contested by any recorded deed transfer.
Gavin's attorney argued that marital issues and business contributions complicated what should happen next.
Mara answered with the actual documents rather than slogans.
I watched Gavin stare at his polished shoes.
For once, he wasn't the loudest person in the room.
The court issued directions intended to preserve evidence and prevent unauthorized work while the dispute continued.
It did not settle our marriage in an afternoon.
Outside, Brenda waited until the hallway emptied before stepping close enough for me to hear her.
“Your aunt ruined Philip,” she whispered.
I held Naomi's arm and remained where I was.
“Then you can tell that to the investigators.”
Brenda's face twisted.
“He lost everything because she lied.”
I thought of the forged papers and the staged collapse.
“If you have evidence, give it to them.”
For a moment she looked very old.
Then she smiled with a familiarity that sickened me.
“You think that ledger is about money,” she said.
I said nothing.
“It's about the name on your birth certificate.”

She turned and walked away before I could ask another question.
