Chapter 5 - The Missing Seventeen Minutes

The concealed camera belonged to the estate's insurance monitoring system, not the private security network.

That difference mattered.

The contractor had purged footage from one server but had apparently overlooked the other.

Bell would not send me the video.

She was right.

Instead, she told Evelyn that the footage had been secured and was being authenticated.

The recorder had captured seventeen minutes of activity before the ambulance call.

Only a sliver of the garage doorway was visible.

The audio quality was poor.

But it showed enough to challenge Ryan's claim that he had spent the afternoon in Dallas.

He appeared on camera entering the garage office carrying his leather folder.

The timestamp placed him at the property less than half an hour before Elise was transported.

His face was clear.

He had told me, twice, that he wasn't anywhere near the house.

Then came the first leak.

A local gossip page published a photo of me arriving at the hospital in uniform.

The caption accused me of using federal authority to intimidate a grieving family.

A second post claimed I had flown home with armed agents to seize a child.

Neither claim was true.

It didn't matter to the thousands of strangers treating a damaged little girl as entertainment.

Evelyn advised silence.

Bell confirmed the criminal case was active but declined details.

My command issued a factual statement limiting my involvement and emphasizing that state investigators had jurisdiction.

I wished that would end it.

At 10:09 that night, Vivian Carter called.

I watched her name appear and decided to let the call go to voicemail.

Her message was smooth and perfectly measured.

"Nia, we are all frightened for Elise. We need to put aside the past for her sake."

Then the warmth vanished.

"I can still help you return to your posting without a custody scandal. Think carefully about what kind of mother this publicity makes you look like."

I saved the recording and forwarded it to Evelyn.

Elise woke from a nightmare just before midnight.

She reached for my hand and asked whether everyone thought she had been bad.

I told her no child was responsible for an adult choosing to hurt them.

"Even if I didn't say what they wanted?"

"Especially then."

Her eyes closed again.

I stayed beside her until morning.

Evelyn called at dawn with unexpected news.

Roarke had moved for an emergency hearing, alleging I was unlawfully isolating Elise from her father.

He had appended the foundation's public statement and a sworn declaration from a security employee who said Ryan had been in Dallas.

The employee's name was Peter Vale.

Bell's concealed footage showed a man in a security jacket arriving at the garage only three minutes after Ryan.

It could have been Vale.

And if it was, the family wasn't merely manufacturing an alibi.

May you like

They were recruiting witnesses to swear to it under oath.
