Chapter 16 - The Hearing That Changed

The custody hearing began with court security quietly separating arrival routes.

Elise was not present in the courtroom.

Her needs had been assessed by professionals, and the parties addressed how her statements could be considered without forcing unnecessary exposure.

I wore a plain suit rather than a uniform.

No badge could decide this case for me.

Evelyn's opening was disciplined.

She talked about safety, medical needs, the existing custody history, and the practical plan for my daughter's care.

Roarke began with my overseas service and his client's claimed devotion.

Then the judge interrupted to ask about the authenticity of the submitted communications.

Roarke said the issue was disputed.

The judge set an evidentiary procedure and warned both sides against relying on unverified recordings.

A medical expert explained the injuries and why the accident account was not medically consistent.

Andrea Price explained the hospital's protective recommendations.

Miss Patel described the child's earlier statements about adults changing her messages.

She did not guess beyond what she had witnessed.

Evelyn walked the judge through the timeline of the video drafted before the attack, the suspicious court filing, and the subsequent synthetic audio.

Every date tightened the story.

Ryan watched without expression until she presented the communication records showing his involvement in the consultant's project.

Then he leaned close to Roarke.

Roarke asked for a recess.

The judge allowed ten minutes.

In the corridor Vivian approached me despite a security officer's warning.

"You can end this," she said.

"The court will decide what is appropriate."

"Elise will grow up knowing you destroyed her family."

I looked at her.

"Elise already knows who hurt her."

Vivian's face hardened.

"You think one recording can bury us?"

"I think my daughter deserves to sleep without fear."

The officer moved between us.

Back in court, Ryan changed his testimony.

He acknowledged being at the estate on the day of the assault.

He now said he had stopped only briefly before leaving for Dallas and had not witnessed the injuries occur.

The statement contradicted his earlier sworn filing.

The judge asked him to explain the inconsistency.

Ryan blamed panic.

Evelyn asked why a father who knew his daughter was injured had delayed seeking help.

Roarke objected, and the court carefully limited the inquiry because related criminal matters were pending.

Still, the contradiction sat in the courtroom like a second witness.

Near the end of the session, the judge issued continued temporary safeguards and scheduled additional proceedings.

It was not the permanent resolution Ryan had expected.

As we stood to leave, Bell sent a message through Evelyn.

Investigators had located a recording whose audio placed Ryan in the garage during the crucial minutes.

And there was one phrase in it nobody had heard clearly before.
