Chapter 17 - The Words Between the Screams

The phrase was not a grand speech.

It was one sentence, low and impatient.

"Don't call anyone until she does the video."

The audio examiner had isolated it through careful analysis of several overlapping channels and compared it with available voice samples.

The finding remained subject to scrutiny, and the defense would have every opportunity to challenge it.

But it aligned with Elise's account of her father's presence and the delay before emergency care.

When Evelyn told me, I closed my eyes.

The worst revelation was not that Ryan had failed to protect his daughter.

I had already known that.

It was that his concern for the video had apparently continued while she needed help.

The prosecutor reviewed the evidence with investigators and sought charges reflecting the conduct they could prove.

Ryan was arrested the following morning under a court-authorized process.

He made no dramatic confession.

He said nothing to the cameras outside the courthouse.

His lawyers promised a vigorous defense.

Vivian called the arrest an outrage.

Within hours, several foundation trustees announced an independent review of the organization's finances and its use of charitable funds.

Miriam Sloane cooperated with that review and with lawful requests for records.

The trust distributions were frozen pending proper fiduciary determination, not because I possessed some magical authority over the accounts.

I felt no joy watching Ryan walk into a courthouse with his hands restrained.

I thought of birthday parties where he had held Elise up to blow out candles.

I thought of nights when we'd both fallen asleep beside her crib.

Those memories were real.

So was the evidence.

One did not erase the other.

Elise learned from her therapist that her father faced criminal allegations.

I let the professional guide the explanation and answered only what she asked.

"Is he going to hate me?" she whispered.

"You didn't cause his choices."

"But I told."

"You told the truth."

She stared at her cast, then nodded as though the sentence was something she had to practice believing.

That afternoon Roarke withdrew as counsel for Vivian in several matters, citing professional conflicts.

A replacement lawyer notified the court that Vivian wanted to preserve her rights as a grandmother.

She also requested contact with Elise.

I read the motion and felt my hands go cold.

Vivian had acknowledged a report about Elise being frightened of the video room.

She had financed the media consultants.

She had offered me money to withdraw.

And now she wanted private access to the child again.

The motion ended with a claim that chilled me more than the legal demands.

May you like

It said Elise had always viewed Vivian as her safest adult.
