Chapter 3: Robert's Last Gift
Chapter 3: Robert's Last Gift
Three months later.
Spring sunlight poured through the dining room windows.
The birthday decorations were gone.
The evidence had been archived.
The silence inside the house no longer felt heavy.
Dan stood beside his mother in the garden Robert had planted years before.
"I sold my share of Vale Holdings."
Evelyn nodded.
"What will you do now?"
He smiled sadly.
"Build something Dad would've been proud of."
Across town, Martin Vale had been convicted on multiple charges, including fraud, conspiracy, obstruction of justice, and criminal negligence related to Robert's death. Families of the other victims finally received long-overdue compensation, and several former employees came forward after the verdict, ending decades of silence.
Chloe accepted a plea agreement after admitting her role in the forged refinancing documents. She publicly apologized to Evelyn and to Dan, acknowledging that greed and fear had led her to betray the family she had married into. Their marriage ended quietly, without bitterness—only regret.
A month later, Dan invited his mother to dinner.
This time she wore no apron.
He insisted on cooking.
The enchiladas were badly overcooked.
They both laughed harder than they had in years.
After dinner, Dan carried Robert's old work boots from the hallway.
He cleaned the leather carefully before placing them inside a glass display case near the fireplace.
Below them sat a small brass plaque.
Robert Hayes
An honest man whose truth was buried... but never lost.
Evelyn stood quietly before the display.
She touched the glass with her fingertips.
For years she had believed justice meant revenge.
Now she understood something different.
Justice meant telling the truth loudly enough that no one could bury it again.
Outside, the evening breeze moved gently through Robert's old oak tree.
Inside, the house was finally filled with something it had not known since the day he died.
Peace.
The End.
