Chapter 2: The House That Chose Its Owner

Red and blue lights painted the windows.

Two detectives entered quietly, followed by officers carrying evidence boxes.

Martin didn't resist.

He simply smiled.

"You think this is enough?"

The lead detective stepped forward.

"It was enough twenty years ago."

Martin frowned.

"What?"

The detective placed another folder beside Evelyn's.

"We reopened Robert Hayes's death six months ago."

Dan looked at his mother in shock.

"You already knew?"

Evelyn nodded.

"I hired a private investigator after someone tried to steal this house."

She glanced briefly at Chloe.

"The forged mortgage gave me exactly what I needed."

The detective opened his folder.

Inside were bank records.

Wire transfers.

Witness statements.

Emails recovered from an abandoned company server.

Everything connected back to Martin Vale.

One retired construction supervisor entered behind the officers.

Dan recognized him immediately.

"Mr. Jenkins?"

The old foreman nodded.

"I was there the day your father died."

His voice cracked.

"I kept quiet because Martin paid for my wife's cancer treatment."

He lowered his head.

"I've regretted it every day since."

Martin suddenly slammed his cane against the floor.

"You all think you're heroes?"

"No," Evelyn answered.

"We're just tired of being afraid."

The officers stepped forward.

Martin slowly offered his wrists.

As the handcuffs clicked shut...

He looked at Chloe.

"I protected this family."

Chloe burst into tears.

"No."

"You destroyed it."

The officers escorted Martin from the house.

For the first time in decades...

The front door closed behind him.

And it finally felt like home again.
