Chapter 1: The Witness Who Refused to Die

Chapter 1: The Witness Who Refused to Die

Martin Vale stopped in the doorway.

No one moved.

His polished cane rested against the hardwood floor as his cold blue eyes swept across the dining room. The birthday candles still flickered, throwing dancing shadows over the evidence spread across Robert's handmade table.

Finally, Martin spoke.

"So..." he said quietly. "You found it."

Evelyn folded her hands.

"I've had it for twenty-six years."

Chloe turned toward her father, panic replacing every trace of arrogance.

"Dad... you said she never found the compartment."

Martin never answered.

Instead, he looked directly at Evelyn.

"You should have destroyed those papers."

"I almost did."

The room remained silent except for Dan's uneven breathing.

Evelyn picked up the final sealed envelope Robert had hidden beneath the table.

"He left me one instruction."

She carefully broke the old wax seal.

Inside rested Robert's handwritten letter.

Her hands trembled—not from fear, but from finally reaching the moment her husband had prepared her for.

She began reading.

If you're reading this, then they finally came for the house.

Martin Vale knows these papers exist.

Never trust anyone who tells you my death was an accident.

Someone inside his family already knows the truth.

Every eye slowly shifted toward Chloe.

Tears filled her eyes.

"I didn't know everything..." she whispered.

Martin's voice became sharp.

"Enough."

But Evelyn wasn't finished.

She removed one final item from the envelope.

A small digital recorder.

"I never understood why Robert hid this."

She pressed PLAY.

Static filled the room.

Then Robert's voice echoed through the dining room.

"If anything happens to me... Martin ordered us onto unsafe scaffolding. He knows it's going to collapse."

The room froze.

Another voice followed.

Martin Vale's.

"We'll settle with the families. It'll cost less than fixing the site."

Dan staggered backward until he hit the wall.

His entire world collapsed in less than ten seconds.

He slowly turned toward Chloe.

"You knew who your father was."

She closed her eyes.

"I found out after we got married."

Dan stared at her.

"You lied to me every single day."

Before Chloe could answer...

Police sirens echoed outside.

Evelyn calmly looked toward the front window.

"They're right on time."

Because she hadn't invited Martin to dinner...

She had invited the police to witness his confession.
