He slept with the hallway light on.
Every loud lock made him jump.
One afternoon he asked me something I wasn't prepared to hear.
"Dad..."
"How do you know who is safe?"

Authorities determined that Sarah had knowingly isolated a sick child, confiscated his emergency phone, and failed to seek help despite repeated complaints that he felt ill.
She accepted responsibility through a negotiated legal resolution.
The court also prohibited her from supervising children until she completed counseling and parenting education.
Matthew moved with his father after his parents separated.
Before leaving, he handed Noah a folded drawing.
It showed two boys holding hands.
Across the top he had written:
"Next time... I'll open the door sooner."
