Chapter 2 – The Truth Noah Had Been Hiding
The ambulance arrived within minutes.
Paramedics wrapped Noah in heated blankets before loading him inside.
Emily refused to let go of his hand.
At the hospital, doctors worked quietly while we waited outside the emergency room.
Every second lasted forever.
Finally, a pediatric physician stepped into the hallway.
"He's going to recover."
Emily burst into tears.
But the doctor's expression remained serious.
"He had a high fever for several hours."
"He was severely dehydrated."
"He also showed signs of prolonged exposure to cold."
Then he asked one question.
"How long was he left alone?"
Neither Emily nor I answered.
We simply looked toward Sarah.
She whispered...
"I don't know."
The doctor frowned.
"He told us he asked to call his parents several times."
"He also told us another child brought him a bottle of water through the basement door."
Matthew.
My nephew.
The birthday boy.
While every adult celebrated upstairs...
An eight-year-old child had understood compassion better than all of them.
Later that evening Noah finally woke.
I smiled.
"You scared us."
His eyes filled with tears.
"I wasn't trying to ruin the party."
"I just wanted Aunt Sarah to believe me."
Emily kissed his forehead.
"We believe you."
He hesitated.

Then quietly added...
"She said if I cried, nobody would come."
