Chapter 3 – Family Divided

The story spread through the family before sunrise.

Some relatives called immediately.

Others stayed silent.

Then my parents arrived.

My mother rushed straight into Noah's hospital room.

She hugged him without saying a word.

My father remained outside with Sarah.

For nearly twenty minutes.

When he finally entered, he looked twenty years older.

He turned toward me.

"I raised both of you."

"I failed one of you."

Sarah started crying.

"Dad—"

He raised his hand.

"No."

"You don't get to explain."

"You abandoned a sick child."

She tried one last defense.

"I never meant for this to happen."

Dad answered quietly.

"Intent doesn't erase consequences."

By afternoon, police officers arrived to collect statements.

The attending physician documented Noah's condition.

The paramedics described the basement.

Even several party guests admitted they had heard Noah crying earlier in the day.

No one had investigated.

Each testimony made the silence upstairs seem even louder.

That evening, Sarah called repeatedly.

Neither Emily nor I answered.

Then a single voicemail arrived.

"I'm sorry..."

May you like

"I'll do anything."

But there are some words that arrive far too late.
