Chapter 1 — The Truth Hidden in the Study

Patricia stood frozen.

"You... you actually cut me off?" she whispered.

Mason didn't answer.

He simply closed the laptop and walked past her.

"Oliver needs a doctor."

That sentence told everyone exactly where his priorities were.

I grabbed the car keys while Mason wrapped Oliver in a blanket.

Lena tried to follow, but suddenly lost her balance.

Mason caught her before she hit the floor.

"Lena..."

"I'm okay," she whispered.

"No."

He gently brushed the damp hair away from her face.

"You've been telling yourself that for too long."

Minutes later we arrived at the emergency clinic.

Oliver's fever had climbed dangerously high.

The pediatrician frowned as he checked the little boy.

"When did this fever begin?"

Lena hesitated.

"...Yesterday morning."

The doctor looked surprised.

"And he wasn't brought in?"

She lowered her head.

"I couldn't leave him alone."

Mason slowly turned toward her.

"What do you mean?"

Tears finally escaped.

"Your mother said I was overreacting."

"She told me children get sick all the time."

"She said if I left the house without cleaning first, I wasn't a good wife."

Silence filled the examination room.

Mason clenched his fists so tightly his knuckles turned white.

The doctor broke the silence.

"Another twelve hours and this could have become much more serious."

Mason closed his eyes.

For the first time that night...

He realized his mother hadn't simply been inconsiderate.

She had put his family in real danger.

Back at the house, Patricia marched into the study.

"If you're doing this because of one misunderstanding, you'll regret it."

She yanked open the desk drawer.

Then froze.

Every folder was gone.

Every property deed.

Every company contract.

Even the spare house keys.

Only one envelope remained.

Across the front, Mason had written four words.

You Chose This Yourself.

Patricia's confident smile disappeared.

May you like

She suddenly realized...

Her son had been preparing for this long before today.
