Chapter 17 - Nicholas Lets Them Think He Is Broken

Hannah listened to Claire's question through the monitor and felt every muscle in her body tighten.

"And after he signs, how long before the trustees can be told he has deteriorated again?"

Dr. Hale did not answer immediately.

On the screen, he stood with his back to the winter-garden windows.

Claire faced him beneath a hanging arrangement of white roses prepared for the wedding photographs.

Hale lowered his voice.

"A few days."

"That is too long."

"Then stop changing the plan every time you become impatient."

Claire stepped closer.

"The plan was supposed to be finished eight months ago."

Nicholas's expression changed beside Hannah.

Mara Ellis lifted one hand.

No one in the monitoring room spoke.

Hale glanced toward the garden doors.

"Keep your voice down."

Claire's face hardened.

"Rebecca was not supposed to be in that car."

Nicholas stopped breathing.

Hannah turned toward him.

Mara leaned closer to the audio console.

Hale's answer came almost as a whisper.

"And Nicholas was not supposed to survive it."

The room froze.

For months they had built theories from missing records, false medication, financial trails, and Rebecca's warning.

Now two people at the center of the story had just acknowledged the crash as a plan.

Nicholas's hands gripped the arms of his wheelchair so tightly his knuckles turned white.

Mara spoke without looking at him.

"Do not move."

Nicholas did not answer.

On the monitor, Claire turned away from Hale.

"Dominic ruined everything."

"Dominic did what he was told."

"He panicked."

"He panicked after Hannah started asking questions."

Hannah felt cold.

Hale opened the medical case.

"Once Nicholas signs, I document an acute decline."

"The trustees transfer temporary control."

"Then the marriage gives you standing to keep it in place."

Claire looked at the case.

"And he stays confused?"

Hale's mouth tightened.

"Long enough."

Hannah looked at Mara.

"You have enough."

Mara did not look away from the screen.

"Enough for what?"

"They just admitted the crash."

"They used pronouns and references a defense attorney will attack for months."

"You heard them."

"I heard them."

Mara finally turned.

"My job is to make sure a jury hears the same thing and understands exactly what it means."

Nicholas's voice was flat.

"Then let them keep talking."

Hannah looked at him.

His face had become frighteningly calm.

That frightened her more than rage would have.

On the screen, Claire reached into her handbag and removed a folded document.

"He signs this before the ceremony."

Hale looked at it.

"You changed the language."

"My lawyer changed the language."

"This gives you authority before the trustees finish the capacity process."

"Exactly."

Hale stared at her.

"You said temporary control."

Claire smiled.

"Temporary is a word people use when they want cooperation."

Hale's face changed.

For the first time, Hannah saw fear directed from him toward Claire.

"Do not get greedy."

Claire laughed softly.

"You are being paid enough not to lecture me."

Hale closed the medical case.

"I am being paid to keep him medically manageable."

"Then do your job."

He looked at her for a long time.

"And if he refuses the medication?"

Claire's answer was immediate.

"He will not."

"Why are you so sure?"

"Because Hannah is the only person who ever taught him to ask what he was swallowing."

Hannah felt the insult and the compliment arrive together.

Claire continued.

"And Hannah will not be in the room."

Mara muted the monitor for a moment.

"That is our point of intervention."

Nicholas looked at her.

"No."

"Mr. Valenti--"

"If you arrest them before the document is presented, Claire says this was wedding stress and Hale says he was discussing routine medication."

Mara's expression hardened.

"You are not directing my investigation."

"Then do not ask me to sit in a chair while the woman who tried to kill my sister walks to an altar."

Hannah put a hand on his shoulder.

Nicholas turned sharply.

"Do not."

She removed it.

"I am not calming you."

"Then what are you doing?"

"Reminding you that Rebecca told you exactly what not to do."

His face changed.

Hannah kept her voice low.

"Do not confuse revenge with proof."

The words hit him harder than anything Mara could have said.

Nicholas looked back at the screen.

Claire and Hale were leaving the winter garden.

"Fine."

His voice was quiet.

"We follow the plan."

Mara unmuted the room microphones.

"Good."

She looked at Hannah.

"You disappear from visible areas now."

Then at Nicholas.

"You go upstairs."

"You appear tired."

"You do not stand."

"You do not confront anyone."

"You do not improvise."

Nicholas raised an eyebrow.

"Anything else?"

"Yes."

Mara leaned closer.

"For the next three hours, pretend you are exactly the man they spent eight months manufacturing."

Nicholas looked toward the monitor.

"Weak."

"Confused."

"Easy to control."

His jaw tightened.

"That may be harder than standing."

Hannah wheeled him to the private elevator.

Before the doors closed, she crouched so they were eye level.

"Do you trust me?"

Nicholas stared at her.

"I hired you twice."

"That was not the question."

He looked away for a second.

Then back.

"Yes."

"Then whatever Claire says, whatever Hale says, do not react until I tell you."

"You sound like Mara."

"That should scare you."

The elevator opened upstairs.

Nicholas's bedroom had been converted into a stage.

Not literally.

Nothing looked different.

That was the point.

A legal recording system approved by investigators had been installed inside fixtures after the listening devices were removed.

The medication cabinet contained only sealed supplies cleared by Dr. Shah and evidence technicians.

The water decanter had been replaced.

The bedside trash had been emptied and bagged.

Every object likely to be touched had been photographed.

Nicholas looked around.

"My bedroom has become a crime lab."

"Your bedroom was a crime scene before anyone admitted it."

Hannah checked his blood pressure.

It was high.

"Breathe slower."

"I am breathing."

"Do it less angrily."

"I do everything angrily."

"I noticed."

A knock sounded at the door.

Hannah stepped behind the connecting bathroom wall where a concealed exit led to the service corridor.

Nicholas closed his eyes and let his shoulders sag.

"Come in."

Claire entered first.

She wore the white coat over her gown.

Hale followed with the medical case.

Hannah watched through a narrow monitor hidden in the service room.

Claire stopped beside Nicholas.

"You look tired."

Nicholas blinked slowly.

"Long morning."

Her expression softened.

Hannah recognized the performance immediately.

This was camera Claire without cameras.

Or so Claire believed.

"I know."

She touched his cheek.

Nicholas did not pull away.

Hannah felt irrational anger even though she knew it was an act.

Hale set the case on the desk.

"How is the pain?"

Nicholas frowned as if the question were difficult.

"Same."

"Any more movement in the right foot?"

Nicholas hesitated.

"No."

Hale and Claire exchanged a glance.

Tiny.

Meaningful.

Hannah saw it.

The camera saw it.

Hale crouched and tested Nicholas's ankle.

Nicholas deliberately let the muscles remain loose.

Hale pressed harder.

"Nothing?"

"No."

Hale looked up.

"You said you stood in the foyer."

Nicholas gave a tired laugh.

"I lifted myself with my arms."

Claire's shoulders relaxed.

Hannah understood.

They had been afraid the recovery was real.

Nicholas had just given them permission to believe it was not.

Hale stood.

"I would like you to take something before the ceremony."

Nicholas looked at the medical case.

"What?"

"For anxiety."

"I am not anxious."

Claire stroked his shoulder.

"You were very agitated at the party."

Nicholas looked at her.

"You hit me."

Claire's hand stopped.

For one dangerous second, the act almost broke.

Then Nicholas lowered his eyes.

"I am sorry."

Hannah nearly forgot to breathe.

Claire did too.

"What did you say?"

Nicholas forced his voice to sound smaller.

"I should not have embarrassed you."

Claire stared at him.

Hale looked suspicious.

Claire did not.

She wanted to believe him too badly.

She bent and kissed his forehead.

"It has been a difficult few weeks."

"For both of us."

"Yes."

Nicholas looked toward the document folder in her hand.

"Is that what I sign?"

Claire smiled.

"Only if you still want to protect us."

"I do."

Hannah hated hearing the words even as she admired the control required to say them.

Hale opened his case.

Hannah's body tensed.

Mara's voice came through the tiny receiver in Hannah's ear.

"Wait."

Hale removed a sealed medication packet.

"This is the same pre-event medication you have used before."

Nicholas looked at it.

"Hannah used to check everything."

Claire's smile cooled.

"Hannah is gone."

"Right."

Nicholas looked down.

"I forget."

Claire and Hale exchanged another glance.

Hannah's stomach twisted.

They liked that answer.

Hale set the packet beside the water.

"Take it when you are ready."

Nicholas reached for it.

Before he opened it, Claire's eyes moved toward the wall.

She stopped.

Hannah saw the change in her face through the monitor.

Claire stared at a brass vent cover above the bookshelf.

One screw was newer than the others.

Her gaze sharpened.

Hannah's heartbeat jumped.

Claire stepped toward the vent.

Hale frowned.

"What?"

Claire did not answer.

She touched the screw.

Then she looked around the room.

Her eyes landed on the bedside lamp.

Then the smoke detector.

Then the wall clock.

Hannah whispered, "She knows."

Mara answered in her ear.

"Stay where you are."

Claire turned toward Nicholas.

The warmth disappeared from her face.

"How long has Hannah been back in the house?"

Nicholas looked genuinely confused this time.

"What?"

Claire crossed the room and opened the bathroom door.

Empty.

She checked the dressing room.

Empty.

Then she walked to the service panel built into the wall.

Hannah backed away from the hidden corridor entrance.

Claire placed one hand on the panel.

"You never fired her, did you?"

Nicholas said nothing.

Claire smiled.

Not kindly.

"I knew it."

She turned toward the wall and raised her voice.

"Hannah."

Hannah remained still.

"I know you are listening."

Mara whispered, "Do not answer."

Claire looked back at Nicholas.

"Do you know what your nurse never understood?"

Nicholas's expression hardened.

Claire walked closer.

"She thought I needed you drugged to control you."

She leaned down.

"I only needed everyone else to believe you were drugged."

Nicholas stared at her.

Claire picked up the medication packet and threw it into the fireplace.

The sealed package landed among cold ashes.

Hale stepped forward.

"Claire, what are you doing?"

She ignored him.

Then she looked directly toward the hidden service wall.

"Come out, Hannah."

"Or I call the hospital and tell them Ethan's surgery cannot proceed because his guardian is involved in an active criminal investigation."

Hannah's blood went cold.

Mara said, "Stay."

Nicholas's eyes filled with fury.

Claire smiled.

"Five seconds."

Hannah looked at Mara through the service-room camera.

"She is threatening him again."

"And we have it recorded."

"She can still make the call."

"The hospital has been warned."

Hannah breathed once.

Twice.

Then Claire began counting.

"Five."

"Four."

Nicholas spoke.

"Stop."

Claire looked at him.

"Three."

"Leave Ethan out of this."

"Two."

The service panel opened.

Hannah stepped into the room.

Claire's smile widened.

"There you are."

Hannah looked at Nicholas.

He looked furious.

Not with her.

With the situation.

Claire walked around Hannah slowly.

"You really cannot help yourself."

"Neither can you."

Claire laughed.

"Still brave."

"Still predictable."

Hale moved toward the door.

Claire stopped him.

"No."

"You stay."

Hale stared at her.

"This is over."

"Not yet."

Claire took the marital amendment from her folder and placed it on Nicholas's desk.

"He signs."

Hannah looked at Nicholas.

Claire followed her gaze.

"And you witness it."

Hannah almost smiled.

"Why would I?"

"Because if you do not, I release every document the agency has on you before Ethan goes into surgery."

"You already released half of them."

"Not the one suggesting you falsified guardianship paperwork four years ago."

Hannah froze.

Claire saw it.

"There it is."

"Fear."

Hannah's voice stayed level.

"There is no such document."

"There will be by noon."

That sentence landed differently.

Not a threat to reveal evidence.

A threat to create it.

Mara heard it.

The cameras heard it.

Nicholas heard it.

Claire did not seem to care anymore.

She believed control mattered more than concealment.

"Sign," she told Nicholas.

Nicholas reached for the pen.

Hannah watched his hand.

He looked at her once.

Three taps of his thumb against the pen.

Do not react.

Their old signal.

Hannah understood.

Nicholas bent over the marital amendment.

May you like

Then, in the bedroom where Claire believed she had finally defeated both of them, Nicholas Valenti signed his name.
