Chapter 12 - The Slap in the Marble Foyer

For the next nine days, Hannah did not enter the Valenti estate.
That did not mean she stopped working on Nicholas's case.
She simply stopped being paid for it.
The nursing agency completed no meaningful review.
Lorraine told her the digital audit would take time.
The insurance administrator refused to guarantee Ethan's surgery coverage while Hannah's employment status remained suspended.
Dr. Hale submitted a declaration stating that Nicholas had shown increasing confusion, suspiciousness, and impaired judgment.
Claire petitioned the trustees for temporary authority over several accounts.
And Nicholas said nothing publicly.
Not one word.
Hannah hated him for that more than she wanted to admit.
Walter contacted her twice.
Both calls were brief.
Both times he said the same thing.
"Do not come back yet."
On the third call, Hannah hung up on him.
Then, on the tenth morning, a courier delivered a plain envelope to her hotel.
Inside was a single sheet of paper.
No signature.
No explanation.
Just an address and a time.
7:00 p.m.
Old Saint Michael's parking garage.
Hannah nearly threw it away.
At 6:55, she was there.
Walter waited beside a black sedan.
Hannah walked straight up to him.
"If you say this is for my protection, I am leaving."
"It is not."
"Good."
"It is because Nicholas is running out of time."
Hannah stopped.
Walter opened the rear door.
Nicholas sat inside.
For one second she felt relief so sharp it became anger.
He looked thinner.
His eyes were tired.
But he was alert.
"You look terrible," Hannah said.
Nicholas almost smiled.
"Nice to see you too."
She did not get in.
"You fired me."
"Yes."
"My brother's insurance was put under review twelve minutes later."
His face changed.
"I restored it the next morning through a separate policy."
Hannah stared at him.
"What?"
"Walter was supposed to tell you."
Hannah looked at Walter.
He looked guilty.
"I was trying not to create a payment trail connected to Nicholas."
"So you let me believe his surgery was in danger?"
Walter's jaw tightened.
"For thirty-six hours."
"That was thirty-five hours too long."
Nicholas spoke quietly.
"You are right."
Hannah turned back to him.
"And the firing?"
"Real enough to Claire."
"Not to you?"
"I needed her to believe she had isolated me."
Hannah laughed once in disbelief.
"You could have warned me."
"Not with the house compromised."
"You could have warned me before the meeting."
Nicholas looked away.
"I did not know the meeting was coming."
"Then you decided in the room."
"Yes."
"And you used me."
"Yes."
He did not defend himself.
That made it harder to stay furious.
Hannah got into the car.
"I still hate the plan."
"So do I."
"Then why are we here?"
Nicholas slid a folder toward her.
Inside were new neurological results from Dr. Shah.
Hannah read them quickly.
Preserved motor pathways.
Measurable voluntary movement.
Improved strength after medication revision.
Recommendation for intensive rehabilitation.
Her pulse quickened.
"You have been seeing her."
"Twice."
"Without Hale knowing?"
"As far as we know."
Walter handed her another document.
It was a copy of Hale's capacity declaration.
Hannah read the date.
Her anger returned.
He had signed it before the independent examination.
The declaration described Nicholas as having progressive cognitive decline.
"This is outrageous."
"It is useful," Nicholas said.
"How?"
"Because tomorrow Claire is hosting an engagement party at the estate."
Hannah looked at him.
"You are still pretending the wedding is happening?"
"Yes."
"Why?"
Walter answered.
"The trustees meet in forty-eight hours."
"Claire believes that if Nicholas signs a marital property amendment tomorrow night, she gains standing to support the emergency control request."
Hannah stared at Nicholas.
"And you are going to sign?"
"No."
"Then why let the party happen?"
Nicholas's face hardened.
"Because Rebecca's financial file shows one final Northstar transfer scheduled the day after the party."
"Someone expects control by then."
Hannah understood.
"You want them to move."
"Yes."
"And if they do not?"
"Then I cancel the wedding publicly and release Dr. Shah's findings."
Hannah closed the folder.
"Where do I fit?"
Nicholas looked at her.
"You do not."
"Try again."
"I asked Walter to meet you so you would know Ethan's coverage is safe."
"That is not why he said you were running out of time."
Walter sighed.
"Nicholas has been refusing most medication because he does not trust the house supply."
Hannah turned sharply.
"What?"
"I am taking what Shah approved."
"From whom?"
"Walter."
"Walter is not a nurse."
"I can read a label," Walter said.
"Congratulations."
Hannah looked back at Nicholas.
"You need someone monitoring you."
"Not you."
"Why?"
"Because they already threatened Ethan."
Hannah leaned closer.
"Stop making decisions for me."
"I am trying to keep an eight-year-old out of this."
"So am I."
"Then stay away tomorrow."
Hannah said nothing.
Nicholas knew that expression.
"Hannah."
"What time does the party start?"
"No."
"Seven?"
"You are not coming."
"Eight?"
Walter rubbed his forehead.
"Six-thirty."
Nicholas glared at him.
Walter shrugged.
"She would find out."
Hannah returned to the hotel and arranged for Ethan to spend the next night in a pediatric hospitality residence connected to the hospital, with security Walter did not choose.
She told no one the room number.
At 6:20 the next evening, she parked two blocks from the Valenti estate.
She wore dark trousers, a black coat, and no scrubs.
Her old keycard no longer worked.
Walter left the service gate unlatched for exactly ninety seconds.
Hannah entered at 6:27.
The mansion looked transformed.
White flowers lined the staircase.
A string quartet played near the ballroom.
Waiters moved through the rooms carrying champagne.
Politicians, lawyers, business executives, and society reporters filled the first floor.
Claire wore a silver evening gown.
She looked radiant.
Nicholas wore a white dress shirt beneath a black jacket.
He smiled when cameras approached.
He barely touched his drink.
Hannah stayed behind the service corridor doors.
She watched through a narrow gap.
At 8:10, Hale arrived.
At 8:26, three trustees arrived.
At 8:44, Claire's attorney carried a leather folder into Nicholas's study.
At 9:02, Nicholas followed.
Claire went with him.
Hale entered last.
Walter signaled Hannah from the far hallway.
Stay.
She stayed.
For nine minutes.
Then she heard Nicholas shout.
Not loudly.
One word.
"No."
The study door opened.
Nicholas came out first.
He was furious.
Claire followed.
Her face was white beneath the makeup.
"You are embarrassing me," she whispered.
Nicholas rolled toward the foyer.
"Good."
"We discussed this."
"You discussed it with Marcus."
"You agreed."
"I agreed to nothing."
Claire grabbed the back of his wheelchair.
Nicholas turned sharply.
"Take your hands off me."
Several guests looked over.
Claire released the handles instantly and smiled at them.
"Just a private disagreement."
Nicholas rolled forward.
Claire followed him into the marble foyer.
"Sign the amendment."
"No."
"You do not understand what happens if the trustees freeze control."
"I understand exactly."
"Marcus says you are not thinking clearly."
Nicholas laughed.
"Marcus says whatever you need him to say."
Claire's face changed.
The cameras were mostly in the ballroom now.
The nearest guests were moving away.
She lowered her voice.
"You are sick."
"No."
Nicholas turned his chair toward her.
"I was being kept sick."
Claire went still.
"What did you say?"
"I have new neurological testing."
All color left her face.
Nicholas saw it.
So did Hannah from the corridor.
"I have movement you said I did not have."
Claire stared at him.
"Hannah."
It was not a question.
Nicholas smiled without warmth.
"You should have been nicer to my nurse."
Claire shoved the wheelchair.
Nicholas hit the edge of a side table.
The chair tipped.
His body went sideways onto the marble.
A gasp came from somewhere behind them.
Claire looked around.
Only two caterers were visible near the front doors.
One hurried outside.
Claire stepped over Nicholas.
"Look what you made me do."
Nicholas pushed himself up on one arm.
"You should leave."
Claire laughed.
Then she slapped him.
The sound cracked through the marble foyer.
Outside, the last caterer loading champagne glasses into a van stopped and looked toward the mansion.
Nicholas Valenti was on the floor.
One cufflink had come loose.
His wheelchair lay on its side several feet away.
His left palm pressed against the cold marble.
Claire stood over him in her silver evening gown.
Her hand rose again.
It never came down.
Someone caught her wrist.
Claire spun around.
Hannah Reed stood between them.
The medication tray she had taken from the service station hit the floor behind her and rattled across the marble.
Claire stared at her as if a ghost had stepped out of the wall.
"Take your hand off me."
Hannah did not.
"No."
Claire's eyes narrowed.
"You work for him."
"Exactly."
Hannah stepped in front of Nicholas.
"You will not touch him again."
For a moment, nobody moved.
Then Nicholas lifted his head.
There was blood at the corner of his mouth.
But there was no humiliation in his eyes.
Only recognition.
The moment from which the entire story had begun had finally arrived.
And this time, Claire had made one mistake she could not explain away.
The front doors were still open.
The caterer outside had his phone raised.
May you like
He had recorded the second half of the confrontation.
