Chapter 15 - The Dead Woman's Last Recording

The estate locked down in under three minutes.
Gates closed.
Vehicles stopped.
Every employee was moved into the ballroom and checked by security.
No one was allowed to leave.
The missing flash drive did not appear.
Neither did Rebecca's letter.
The unconscious security officer had a concussion and no memory of who struck him.
The backup generator had been manually disabled from a maintenance panel in the basement.
The panel required a key.
Five people had one.
Three were in the ballroom.
One was Walter.
The fifth key belonged to Dominic Russo.
The dead man.
Hannah stood in the basement staring at the empty hook where Dominic's key should have been returned months earlier.
"Who inventoried his keys?"
Walter's mouth tightened.
"I did."
"Was this one missing then?"
"I did not know he had a duplicate."
"Another thing you did not know."
Walter looked at her.
"You are welcome to be angry."
"I am past angry."
Nicholas sat near the maintenance panel.
"Being angry requires energy."
Hannah looked at him.
"You should be in bed."
"There it is."
"What?"
"The nurse returns when you run out of accusations."
Hannah did not smile.
"Your blood pressure is high."
"My house was robbed during a blackout."
"That is not a medical exemption."
Walter rubbed his forehead.
"Please keep arguing."
"It is the only normal thing left."
They returned upstairs after dawn.
A technician confirmed the theft had likely been planned days earlier.
The blackout was not improvised.
Someone had inserted a device into the generator control box that allowed a remote shutdown at a chosen time.
Hannah looked at Nicholas.
"The engagement party was the distraction."
"Or the opportunity."
"Someone expected the evidence to be in the library after the party."
Walter sat down heavily.
"Which means someone knew we had Rebecca's box."
Hannah thought of the listening devices.
"They heard us open it."
Nicholas's face hardened.
"Then they heard everything."
"Maybe not."
Hannah remembered the layout of the steel box.
Documents on top.
Flash drive beneath them.
A thin velvet liner at the bottom.
Something had bothered her when she first saw it.
Not enough to identify.
Now she knew.
"Where is the box?"
Walter looked at her.
"Empty in the desk."
"Bring it."
He did.
Hannah turned the box upside down.
Nothing happened.
She pressed the velvet lining.
The center flexed.
Nicholas leaned forward.
"What is that?"
Hannah used the edge of a letter opener to lift the lining.
Beneath it was a second compartment.
Inside lay a small digital recorder.
Walter stared.
"Rebecca, you paranoid genius."
Nicholas picked it up with both hands.
He did not press play.
Not yet.
For nearly a minute he simply held the recorder.
Hannah watched his thumb rest above the button.
"You do not have to listen now," she said.
Nicholas looked at her.
"Yes, I do."
"No."
"You want to."
"That is different."
He looked down again.
"What if the last thing she says is that she was afraid of me?"
Hannah had not expected the question.
Walter looked away.
Nicholas continued.
"Everyone keeps telling me Rebecca was trying to protect me."
"What if she was trying to protect herself from the way I handled problems?"
Hannah sat across from him.
"Then you listen to that too."
"And you do not turn it into another reason to punish yourself."
"You make that sound easy."
"It is not."
"Very little worth doing is improved by pretending it is easy."
Nicholas gave her a tired look.
"That sounded inspirational."
"Take it back."
A faint smile appeared.
Then vanished.
He looked at the recorder again.
For the first time, Hannah realized the evidence was not just evidence to him.
It was the possibility of hearing his sister alive again.
That made pressing one button harder than facing any person in the house.
There was a label on the back.
FOR NICK ONLY.
His fingers trembled.
Hannah pretended not to notice.
"We should copy it before playing it."
Nicholas nodded.
This time they did not use the house network.
A forensic technician created three copies on isolated drives.
One went to Nicholas's attorney.
One went to a state investigator Walter trusted.
One remained with Hannah.
Only then did Nicholas press play.
Rebecca's voice filled the library.
"Nick, if Walter actually followed my instructions, you are furious with him right now."
Nicholas looked at Walter.
Walter almost laughed.
Rebecca continued.
"Good."
"Stay furious for five minutes and listen anyway."
Nicholas closed his eyes.
"Northstar is not the theft."
Hannah leaned forward.
"Northstar is the bait."
Walter's face changed.
Rebecca's recording continued.
"Dad created it years ago."
"Walter and I kept it because I wanted a controlled account that could reveal forged approvals."
"Someone has been using your digital signature to authorize payments."
"I let the early transfers continue because I wanted to see where the money ended."
Hannah looked at Walter.
He whispered, "She never told me that part."
Rebecca's voice became quieter.
"The money ends in three places."
"A security company connected to Dominic Russo."
"A medical consulting company connected to Marcus Hale."
"And a private foundation controlled by Claire Whitmore's father."
Nicholas's face became stone.
Rebecca paused on the recording.
"I do not know whether Claire's father knows."
"I do know Claire does."
Hannah felt the room tighten.
"Three nights ago I heard Claire and Marcus talking in the winter garden."
"They thought I had left."
"Marcus said your recovery was moving faster than expected."
Nicholas opened his eyes.
Hannah stopped breathing.
Rebecca continued.
"Claire told him that recovery did not matter if the trust believed you were incapable of managing it."
"Marcus said you would never agree to a capacity evaluation."
"Claire answered, 'He does not need to agree if everyone around him sees what we need them to see.'"
Walter swore under his breath.
Nicholas stared at the recorder.
Rebecca's voice shook for the first time.
"Nick, I think they are planning something that requires you alive but weak."
The exact theory Hannah had reached now came from eight months earlier.
Before the crash.
Before the wheelchair.
Before Nicholas had ever taken the first suspicious pill.
Rebecca continued.
"I confronted Claire about the Northstar transfers."
"She denied everything."
"The next day I found the cut brake line."
Hannah felt the hairs rise on her arms.
"I had it replaced."
"Tonight Dominic asked whether I planned to attend the charity dinner with you tomorrow."
"He already knew the car would be used."
"That bothered me enough to record this."
Nicholas's face was white.
Rebecca's voice softened.
"If nothing happens, I will delete it and you can make fun of me for being dramatic."
"If something does happen, do not confuse revenge with proof."
Nicholas swallowed.
"You will want to hurt someone."
"Do not."
"Make them explain themselves in a room where lies have consequences."
Hannah looked at Nicholas.
The old mafia reputation lived in every story told about him.
Rebecca had known exactly what her brother would want to do.
The recording continued.
"There is one more thing."
"Marcus has been signing medical documents for Claire for years."
"Not treatment documents."
"Competency documents for her father's businesses."
"If he ever becomes your treating neurologist, get another doctor immediately."
Hannah closed her eyes.
He had become Nicholas's neurologist after the crash.
Who recommended him? she wondered.
Rebecca answered seconds later.
"Claire keeps pushing Marcus as the best trauma specialist in the city."
"He is not."
"He is a neurologist with a clean public reputation and a private habit of doing favors."
Nicholas looked at Walter.
"Who hired Hale after the crash?"
Walter's face was sick.
"Claire."
The recording was almost finished.
Rebecca took a breath.
"Nick, I know you love her."
Nicholas looked down.
"That is why I have waited."
"I wanted proof strong enough that you could not explain it away because losing Claire felt easier than losing your certainty about her."
Hannah felt the cruelty of the truth.
That was exactly what had happened.
Nicholas had explained away every early warning because the alternative required accepting that the woman he trusted might be using his love as access.
Rebecca's final words were quieter.
"If I am wrong, forgive me."
"If I am right, forgive yourself."
The recording ended.
No one moved.
Nicholas stared at the dead screen of the recorder.
Walter turned away.
Hannah gave them both silence.
Then Nicholas spoke.
"Send it to the police."
Walter turned back.
"All of it?"
"All of it."
"The Northstar records expose family financial structures we have protected for years."
Nicholas looked at him.
"My sister died trying to prove this."
"I am done protecting structures."
Walter nodded.
Hannah felt something shift in Nicholas.
Not weakness.
Not recovery.
Choice.
His phone rang.
Claire.
Everyone looked at the screen.
Nicholas answered on speaker.
"What?"
Claire sounded calm.
"I heard there was a power failure."
"News travels quickly."
"I still care what happens to you."
"No, you care what happens to the trust."
Silence.
Then Claire sighed.
"Rebecca filled your head with suspicion before she died."
Nicholas looked at Hannah.
Claire had just acknowledged knowing about Rebecca's suspicions.
"What did she tell you?" Nicholas asked.
"Enough to know she hated me."
"She recorded you."
Walter's head snapped toward him.
Hannah almost stopped breathing.
Nicholas had revealed too much.
But perhaps deliberately.
The line went silent.
Claire's voice returned different.
"Recorded what?"
Nicholas smiled coldly.
"Come to the wedding and find out."
Hannah stared at him.
Claire said nothing for three seconds.
Then she laughed softly.
"There is no wedding."
"There is now."
"You threw me out."
"And yet you still want the trust."
Another silence.
Nicholas continued.
"Three days."
"Same estate."
"Same guest list."
"If you believe I am incompetent, come prove it in front of everyone."
Claire's voice became very quiet.
"You have no idea what you are doing."
Nicholas looked at Rebecca's recorder.
"For the first time in eight months, I do."
He ended the call.
Hannah stared at him.
"Three days?"
"She will come."
"You just told a woman we suspect of conspiracy and attempted murder that you have a recording of her."
"Yes."
"That is your plan?"
"Part of it."
"What is the other part?"
Nicholas looked at Walter.
Walter slowly smiled.
May you like
"We make sure every lie she tells at the wedding has consequences."
