Chapter 8 - THE CHILD THEY SWITCHED

Nathan reached the station before Evan finished his first formal interview.
Grace was still in custody.
He found Daniel waiting outside the interview room with a sealed lab packet in his hand.
Nathan took it without greeting him.
The report used cautious language.
Paternity probability greater than 99.99 percent.
Maternal relationship to Grace Bennett excluded on tested markers.
Nathan read the lines three times.
"This is wrong."
Daniel nodded.
"It is preliminary."
"Grace gave birth to Lily."
"That is what she says."
Nathan looked at him sharply.
"You think she is lying?"
"I think we have spent the last twelve hours learning that records, videos, identities, and even deaths can be manufactured."
Nathan looked through the glass at Grace.
She sat alone with her head against the wall.
"We tell her."
Daniel stopped him.
"Not until Quinn is here."
"Why?"
"Because if the result is real, Grace may be a victim of something much larger than we understood."
Nathan stared at the paper again.
A memory returned.
Grace saying that powerful people had forced her to vanish.
Evelyn warning that a child would become leverage.
Richard's sealed instructions triggered if the child was found.
The phrase on Victoria's hidden document.
There cannot be an heir outside the agreement.
Nathan's blood went cold.
"What if they did not only hide Lily?"
Daniel's face tightened.
"What are you thinking?"
"What if they controlled her from the beginning?"
Quinn arrived with two investigators and asked for the report.
She read it in silence.
"We rerun everything at an independent lab."
Nathan nodded.
"Immediately."
"I already ordered collection from Nathan and Grace."
"And Lily?"
"A pediatric specialist will handle it gently."
Nathan looked toward Grace.
"She deserves to know before anyone touches Lily again."
Quinn agreed.
They entered together.
Grace looked at their faces and stood.
"What happened?"
Nathan placed the report on the table.
"The paternity test says Lily is mine."
Grace's eyes filled instantly.
For one brief second, pure relief crossed her face.
Then she noticed no one else was smiling.
"What else?"
Nathan could not say it.
Daniel did.
"The same screen says you are not Lily's biological mother."
Grace stared at him.
Then she laughed.
It was not amusement.
It was disbelief so complete that her body rejected the sentence.
"No."
Quinn sat opposite her.
"We are repeating the test."
"No."
Grace pushed the report away.
"I carried her."
Her voice cracked.
"I felt her kick every night for four months."
Nathan watched her hands begin to shake.
"I was in labor for sixteen hours."
Grace looked at him now.
"You think I stole someone's baby?"
"No."
"Then what are you saying?"
"I do not know yet."
Grace stood too quickly and winced from her injured shoulder.
"I held her before anyone else."
She stopped.
The color left her face.
Nathan noticed.
"What?"
Grace sat down slowly.
"No."
"Grace."
"I did not hold her first."
Quinn leaned forward.
"Tell us."
Grace pressed both hands to her forehead.
"I gave birth at North Lake Women's Clinic."
Daniel recognized the name.
"That clinic closed four years ago."
"Yes."
Grace swallowed.
"My labor became complicated."
"How?"
"They said Lily's heart rate dropped."
"Cesarean?"
"Emergency."
Grace's breathing became shallow.
Nathan moved his chair closer.
"Take your time."
She looked at him angrily.
"I do not want time."
She forced herself to continue.
"They put me under general anesthesia."
"Why general?"
"They said there was no time for anything else."
Quinn wrote quickly.
"Who was the doctor?"
"Dr. Malcolm Reese."
Quinn's pen stopped.
"Are you sure?"
"Yes."
"What?"
Nathan looked between them.
Quinn pulled out her phone.
"Malcolm Reese lost his medical license six years ago."
Grace stared at her.
"That is impossible."
"What year was Lily born?"
"Five years ago this November."
Quinn turned the screen.
The state record showed Reese's license had been revoked eleven months before Lily's birth for falsifying patient charts and accepting illegal payments.
Grace looked physically ill.
"He delivered my baby."
Daniel asked the next question.
"When did you first see Lily?"
Grace looked at the table.
"The next morning."
"How many hours after surgery?"
"Maybe nine."
Nathan's stomach twisted.
"Was she ever out of your sight after that?"
"Only for routine tests."
"Did anyone tell you there had been complications with her?"
Grace nodded slowly.
"They said she had trouble breathing at birth but recovered."
Quinn looked at Nathan.
"We need the clinic records."
Daniel was already searching.
"North Lake was owned by North Cross Medical Holdings."
Everyone went still.
That was the company Evan had said owned the farmhouse where Evelyn was being kept.
Nathan felt the pieces lock together with terrifying precision.
"Conrad owned the clinic."
Daniel nodded.
"Through three layers of subsidiaries, yes."
Grace covered her mouth.
"What did they do to my baby?"
Nathan did not answer.
No one could.
Quinn called for the archived birth files.
The clerk returned a preliminary response fifteen minutes later.
All North Lake records from the week of Lily's birth had been destroyed in a basement flood.
Grace laughed again, this time with fury.
"Of course they were."
Nathan looked at Daniel.
"Find the nurses."
"I will."
"Every doctor, orderly, cleaner, ambulance driver, anyone who worked there."
"I understand."
Grace suddenly looked at Nathan.
"There was another woman."
"What woman?"
"In the room beside mine."
"Another patient?"
"Yes."
"Pregnant?"
"She was in labor the same night."
Grace closed her eyes.
"I heard her screaming before they took me to surgery."
Quinn waited.
"Then what?"
"The next morning, her room was empty."
"She could have been discharged."
"Not that fast."
"How do you know?"
Grace looked at Quinn.
"There was blood on the floor outside her room."
Nathan felt cold.
"Did you ask anyone?"
"A nurse told me the woman had been transferred."
"Name?"
Grace thought hard.
"I never knew her name."
Then she remembered something.
"But I saw a man visiting her."
"Who?"
Grace's eyes widened.
"Rourke."
Nathan stood.
Caleb Rourke had been at the clinic the night Lily was born.
Quinn called her team.
"Find Rourke now."
A knock interrupted her.
An officer handed Quinn a folder recovered from Evan's car after the hangar shooting.
Inside was a photocopy of a birth certificate.
Grace recognized the hospital registrar's seal.
The child listed was Lily Evelyn Bennett.
Nathan was not named as father.
Grace Bennett was named as mother.
At first, it looked exactly as Grace remembered.
Then Daniel noticed the document identification number had been altered.
He ran it through the state index.
The original number belonged to another birth certificate filed the same night.
Quinn requested the basic index entry.
A name appeared on the screen.
INFANT FEMALE VALE.
Mother: Victoria Anne Vale.
No father listed.
Nathan stared at the screen.
"Victoria had a baby the same night as Grace?"
Daniel looked stunned.
"There is no public record of her ever being pregnant."
Grace's face had gone completely white.
Quinn searched the birth index again.
The entry had been sealed by court order forty-eight hours after filing.
The petitioning attorney was Elias Ward.
The same former prosecutor Richard Cole admitted hiring to create false evidence against Grace.
Nathan felt the room close around him.
Lily was biologically his.
Grace was not biologically Lily's mother.
A sealed record said Victoria gave birth to a baby girl on the same night, in the same medical system controlled by Conrad.
Nathan whispered the only question that mattered.
"Whose child did Grace give birth to?"
No one answered.
Then Quinn's phone rang.
She listened for less than ten seconds.
"We found Dr. Malcolm Reese."
Nathan leaned forward.
"Where?"
Quinn looked at Grace.
"He has been living under another name in Indiana."
"Bring him in."
Quinn's face hardened.
"We cannot."
May you like
"Why?"
"Because someone killed him two hours ago."
