Chapter 11 - THE FARMHOUSE

Nathan refused to wait until morning.
Quinn refused to let him go without police support.
They compromised in the least satisfying way possible.
Nathan, Quinn, Daniel, and two state investigators drove north in separate vehicles while Grace and Lily moved to a safe apartment arranged through Quinn's department.
Grace hated being left behind.
Nathan hated leaving them.
Before he left, Lily handed him the paper star she had been folding at the station.
"For Grandma."
Nathan stared at it.
"You have never met her."
"Neither have you."
The sentence stopped him.
Technically Lily was wrong.
Nathan had known Evelyn until he was six.
Emotionally, she was exactly right.
He folded the star into his wallet.
Grace walked him to the door.
"If it is a trap, do not try to be brave."
"What should I try to be?"
"Alive."
Nathan met her eyes.
"I will come back."
Grace looked at him carefully.
"That is the second promise you have made Lily."
"I remember the first."
"Good."
The farmhouse coordinates Evan provided led to a property twelve miles outside Madison.
A white house sat at the end of a narrow road bordered by cornfields.
No lights were visible.
Quinn's team stopped half a mile away.
A drone went up first.
Thermal imaging showed three heat signatures inside the house and one in a detached barn.
Nathan watched from the back of an unmarked SUV.
"Which one is Evelyn?"
Quinn shook her head.
"Thermal cannot tell us that."
"Then we go in."
"My team goes in."
"You said three people."
"I can count."
Nathan leaned closer.
"If one is my mother and the others are armed, every minute matters."
Quinn looked at him.
"And if you get shot in the doorway, every minute stops mattering to you."
Daniel muttered from the rear seat.
"For once, listen to the detective."
Nathan did not respond.
The entry team moved at 11:14 p.m.
The first door opened without resistance.
The first room was empty.
The second contained medical equipment, a hospital bed, oxygen tanks, and restraints attached to the frame.
Nathan watched through a body-camera feed.
His hands became fists when he saw the restraints.
The third room held a man in medical scrubs.
He surrendered immediately.
The fourth held an older woman asleep under sedation.
Nathan saw silver hair.
His heart stopped.
"That is her."
The camera moved closer.
The woman turned her head.
It was not Evelyn.
Nathan's hope collapsed so quickly it made him dizzy.
Quinn's voice came over the radio.
"We have another female, approximately seventy, not matching photograph."
The second heat signature belonged to a nurse.
The third was the male attendant.
The barn remained.
Officers crossed the yard.
Nathan saw movement on the thermal screen.
The barn signature shifted toward the rear wall.
"Someone is running."
The team entered.
A man burst through a side door and sprinted toward the field.
Officers tackled him fifty yards away.
Nathan recognized Caleb Rourke before anyone confirmed it.
Rourke's gray hair and broad frame were unmistakable.
Quinn turned to Nathan.
"Stay here."
Nathan was already opening the door.
Quinn swore and followed him.
Rourke knelt in wet grass with his hands cuffed behind him.
An officer held him down by the shoulder.
Nathan approached slowly.
Rourke looked up and smiled.
"You found the wrong woman."
Nathan wanted to strike him.
He did not.
"Where is Evelyn?"
Rourke spat blood from his mouth.
"Still asking the wrong question."
"Where is my mother?"
"Which mother?"
Nathan froze.
Quinn stepped closer.
"Explain that."
Rourke laughed.
"Ask Conrad."
Nathan crouched until they were eye level.
"I am asking you."
Rourke's smile faded.
"Your father loved secrets because secrets made people manageable."
"My father is dead."
"And he is still managing you."
Nathan grabbed Rourke's jacket before Quinn pulled him back.
"Do not touch him."
Rourke looked pleased.
"There he is."
Nathan stepped away.
"What did you mean by which mother?"
Rourke looked at Quinn.
"Lawyer."
"You are going to need one."
"Then I am done talking."
Quinn had him placed in the back of a state vehicle.
Nathan watched him disappear behind tinted glass.
Daniel came from the farmhouse carrying a cardboard archive box.
"You need to see this."
Inside were medication logs.
Patient names were replaced with numbers.
One number appeared repeatedly over eleven years.
Patient 614.
Daniel showed Nathan a billing cross-reference.
614 corresponded to Evelyn Hart Cole.
The last medication entry was dated nine days earlier.
"She was here."
Nathan looked toward the house.
"They moved her."
"Nine days ago."
"Before Grace was attacked."
Daniel nodded.
"Before Grace entered the final two weeks before your wedding."
The timing was not random.
Conrad had begun moving pieces before the crisis became visible.
Quinn searched the farmhouse with her team.
In the basement they found shelves of archived boxes.
Most had been emptied.
One remained behind a furnace.
It contained photographs of Evelyn over almost three decades.
Some showed her in hospitals.
Some showed her in apartments.
Some showed her outdoors with Rourke nearby.
Then Nathan found one that made him sit down.
It showed Evelyn at a playground.
A little boy was running toward her.
Nathan recognized himself.
He was perhaps nine years old.
The date on the photograph was three years after Evelyn's funeral.
"I do not remember this."
Daniel looked closer.
"Are you sure it is you?"
"That coat was mine."
Nathan remembered the striped sleeves.
He remembered the playground too.
But not Evelyn.
Quinn found a medical note attached to the photograph.
Pediatric visit following exposure event.
Temporary amnesia expected.
Nathan stared at the words.
"Exposure to what?"
Daniel searched the box.
Another page listed a physician.
Dr. Malcolm Reese.
Nathan felt nauseated.
Reese had not only been involved in Lily's birth.
He had treated Nathan as a child.
The lie stretched further back than he had imagined.
Nathan tried to remember age nine.
A summer illness.
Two weeks in a private clinic.
His father saying Nathan had suffered viral meningitis.
Nathan had always believed that explained the blank patches in his memory from that year.
Now he wondered whether the illness had been manufactured too.
Quinn found an old cassette tape in the bottom of the box.
The label read NATHAN - PLAYGROUND - SESSION 3.
They located a cassette player in the farmhouse office.
The tape crackled.
A child's voice spoke.
Nathan's voice.
"I saw Mommy."
An adult man answered.
Reese.
"Your mother is gone, Nathan."
"No, she hugged me."
"You had a dream."
"It was not a dream."
"Your father says you have been confused since you were sick."
Young Nathan began crying.
Adult Nathan stood perfectly still.
Reese continued in a soothing voice.
"Sometimes our minds show us people we miss."
"She smelled like lavender."
Nathan closed his eyes.
He remembered lavender.
Not the playground.
Not the hug.
Just the smell.
The tape continued.
A door opened in the background.
Another man spoke.
Richard Cole.
"Is it working?"
Reese answered.
"He is resisting the suggestion, but the sedative will help with consolidation."
Nathan's stomach turned.
His father had drugged him to make him doubt seeing his own mother.
Daniel switched off the tape.
No one spoke.
Nathan walked outside into the cold night.
He bent forward with his hands on his knees and tried to breathe.
Quinn stayed several feet away.
She did not touch him.
She did not offer comfort he had not asked for.
After a minute, Nathan stood.
"Find her."
"We will."
"Not we will try."
Quinn met his eyes.
"Then help me with facts, not orders."
Nathan nodded because she was right.
His phone rang.
Grace.
He answered immediately.
"Are you safe?"
Her voice was low.
"Someone is inside the building."
Nathan's blood went cold.
"Where are the officers?"
"One is not answering his radio."
"Where is Lily?"
"With me."
A sound came through the phone.
Three slow knocks.
Grace stopped breathing.
Nathan heard Lily whisper.
"Mommy, that is the bathroom code."
Nathan gripped the phone.
"What bathroom code?"
Grace answered in a whisper.
"The code Evelyn taught us."
Three knocks sounded again.
Then a woman's voice came through the locked apartment door.
"Grace, open the door."
Grace began crying before she touched the lock.
"Nathan."
May you like
"What?"
"That is Evelyn."
