Chapter 12 - EVELYN

Nathan kept Grace on the phone while Quinn called the officers assigned to the safe apartment.

One answered from the stairwell.

The other did not.

A third unit was three minutes away.

Grace stood behind the locked door with Lily pressed against her side.

"Do not open it yet."

Nathan's voice sounded harsher than he intended.

"She knows the code."

"So does anyone who forced it out of her."

Grace understood.

"Evelyn, step away from the door."

The woman outside answered calmly.

"You still do not trust easily."

Grace closed her eyes.

"You taught me not to."

"Good."

Nathan heard faint movement.

The woman outside moved back.

Quinn's unit reached the floor.

Officers found an elderly woman standing with both hands visible.

She carried no weapon.

Her identification said Evelyn Hart.

The photograph matched Nathan's mother at age sixty-seven.

Nathan still refused to believe until Quinn sent a live video call.

The screen opened.

A silver-haired woman looked directly into the camera.

Nathan forgot how to breathe.

Time changed her face but not her eyes.

They were the same gray-green eyes he saw every morning in the mirror.

Evelyn touched the screen with trembling fingers.

"Nathan."

He could not answer.

Twenty-nine years of grief did not reverse in a second.

It collided with anger, disbelief, memory, and hope until he could not tell one from another.

"Are you really my mother?"

Evelyn smiled through tears.

"You broke your left wrist jumping from the apple tree when you were five."

Nathan closed his eyes.

"Dad told everyone I fell from a swing."

"Because he told you not to climb the tree."

A broken laugh escaped Nathan before he could stop it.

Evelyn continued.

"You hated peas."

"I still do."

"You slept with a blue wooden train under your pillow until you were six."

Nathan sat down on the farmhouse steps.

Nobody except his parents had known about the train.

He had hidden it after Evelyn's funeral because looking at it hurt too much.

"Why did you leave me?"

The question came out like a child's.

Evelyn's face crumpled.

"I did not."

Nathan looked away.

"I buried you."

"I know."

"I stood beside a casket."

"I know."

"Dad told me you were dead every day I asked."

"I know."

Nathan's anger finally surfaced.

"Then where were you?"

Evelyn did not defend herself.

"Drugged, threatened, moved, watched, and sometimes too frightened to remember my own name."

Silence followed.

Nathan regretted the question and did not regret it at all.

Both feelings were true.

"I am coming back."

Evelyn shook her head.

"No."

"I have waited twenty-nine years."

"Then wait one more hour."

Her eyes sharpened.

"Rourke wanted you in Wisconsin tonight."

Nathan looked toward the state vehicle holding him.

"We arrested him."

"Then he wanted to be arrested."

Quinn heard that.

"Why?"

Evelyn looked toward someone off camera.

"Because his job was never to keep me in that farmhouse."

"What was his job?"

"To get Nathan out of Chicago."

Nathan stood.

"Why?"

Evelyn's answer came instantly.

"The trust."

Daniel stepped closer to the phone.

"What about the trust?"

"Richard left a hidden amendment."

"Where?"

"Cole Tower."

Nathan stared at Daniel.

Evelyn continued.

"It activates if Nathan publicly acknowledges a biological child before his fortieth birthday."

"He did."

Daniel looked alarmed.

"At the hospital and in court."

"Then the clock has started."

"What clock?"

Evelyn's voice became urgent.

"Twenty-four hours to file the child's protected interest with the corporate registrar."

Daniel swore.

"I never saw that amendment."

"Richard hid it from the official estate packet."

"Why?"

"Because Conrad had access to the estate lawyers."

Nathan looked at the time.

Lily had first called him Daddy in front of multiple witnesses around 8:20 the previous evening.

He had acknowledged her shortly afterward.

Less than six hours remained.

"What happens if we miss the deadline?"

Evelyn looked at him.

"The trust defaults to the existing succession agreement."

Daniel understood.

"Vale Capital and the spouse trustee."

"Nathan is not married."

"Not yet."

Evelyn's face darkened.

"Conrad does not need him married if he can establish Victoria as a legal parent under the sealed birth record."

Nathan felt sick.

"Then she becomes trustee through the parent designation."

"Yes."

"Even if the birth record is fraudulent?"

"Until a court invalidates it."

Daniel started calling the corporate registrar.

No answer.

The after-hours legal line routed to voicemail.

Nathan knew why.

Evan controlled the company systems now, but Evan was in custody.

Someone else had locked the doors.

"Who can file the amendment?"

"The CEO, general counsel, or family trustee."

Nathan looked at Daniel.

"You are a family trustee."

"If I can access the original amendment."

"Where is it?"

Evelyn answered.

"Richard's private archive on the forty-sixth floor."

Nathan frowned.

"There is no forty-sixth floor."

Cole Tower publicly had forty-five floors.

Evelyn almost smiled.

"That is why he chose it."

Daniel stared at the building plans on his tablet.

A mechanical level sat between floors forty-five and the roof.

It was labeled M2.

No office appeared on any plan.

"How do we enter?"

"Service elevator three."

"Code?"

Evelyn gave six digits.

Nathan recognized them.

His birthday.

"Too obvious."

"Richard was sentimental in the least useful ways."

Nathan almost smiled again.

Then an officer shouted in the background of Evelyn's video.

The screen jerked.

Grace screamed.

Nathan stood.

"What happened?"

A gunshot cracked through the speaker.

Then another.

The video went black.

"Grace."

No answer.

"Grace."

Quinn called the apartment unit.

Static.

She called again.

An officer answered, breathing hard.

"Shots fired from the building across the alley."

"Status?"

"No injuries inside."

Nathan closed his eyes.

"Evelyn?"

"Safe."

"Grace?"

"Safe."

"Lily?"

"Safe."

Nathan breathed again.

Quinn ordered the entire group relocated immediately.

Evelyn came back on the phone two minutes later.

"They know I reached you."

"Then we move you somewhere else."

"No place is safe while Conrad still controls pieces of the system."

"We have Rourke."

"Rourke is a piece."

"Then tell me the whole board."

Evelyn looked at Nathan.

"Your father will."

"He is dead."

"His confession on the drive is only the first part."

Nathan remembered the twelve dated folders.

They had opened only the Evelyn folder.

"What is in the others?"

"Video journals."

"About what?"

"Everything he did for Conrad."

Nathan looked at Daniel.

"We have the drive."

Evelyn shook her head.

"You have the index."

Nathan stared at her.

"What?"

"The files point to recordings stored offline in the hidden archive."

Daniel stopped dialing.

"So the real confession is in Cole Tower."

"Yes."

Nathan looked at the time again.

Five hours and forty-one minutes remained before the trust deadline.

Cole Tower security now answered to an acting leadership team installed by the same board that removed him.

Conrad knew Nathan needed something inside.

Rourke had lured police north.

The sniper attack had forced Grace, Lily, and Evelyn to relocate.

Every move had split them into separate battles.

Nathan finally saw the shape of Conrad's plan.

Overwhelm everyone at once.

Make truth compete with survival.

Then win by the clock.

Nathan looked at Quinn.

"I am going back to Chicago."

"So am I."

"You need to process Rourke."

"Wisconsin can hold him."

Daniel closed his briefcase.

"If we do not file that amendment, Conrad may gain control of the voting trust before we can challenge anything."

Nathan looked at his mother's face on the screen.

"Come with Grace."

Evelyn shook her head.

"I will meet you somewhere safer."

"Where?"

"The one place Conrad will not expect."

"Which is?"

Evelyn looked almost amused.

"His own house."

Nathan stared at her.

"You want to hide in Conrad Vale's house?"

"No."

Her smile disappeared.

"I want to take back what he stole from me thirty years ago."

The call ended.

Daniel looked at Nathan.

"What did Conrad steal from her?"

Nathan thought of the company, the trust, the hidden archive, and the decades of silence.

He had no idea.

May you like

But he knew where the answer was waiting.

On a floor of Cole Tower that officially did not exist.
