Chapter 18: The Sinking Ship

The wail of approaching police and coast guard sirens echoed down the jagged cliffs, bouncing off the stone walls of the hidden cove.

Leah knelt beside her mother, pressing a folded tactical field bandage hard against the bullet wound in Elena’s shoulder to stem the heavy bleeding.

Elena winced in pain, her breath coming in shallow, ragged gasps, but a faint, proud smile touched her lips.

"You... you handled yourself well, Leah," Elena murmured, her voice weak as rain mixed with the sea spray on her face.

"Stop talking and save your strength," Leah replied, her voice tight with suppressed emotion.

She pulled her satellite phone from her pocket with her free hand, tapping the emergency override button to signal the coast guard rescue chopper circling above.

"Medical evacuation needed at Sector Zero cove. Suspect secured, civilian wounded," Leah barked into the receiver, her tone razor-sharp and commanding.

A few yards away, Chloe was sobbing hysterically into the mud, her hands cuffed behind her back with heavy zip-ties Leah had pulled from the tactical pack.

"You can't leave me here! The feds are going to put me away forever!" Chloe wailed, thrashing against the cold stone.

"Save your breath for the judge," Leah said coldly without even turning around to look at her former sister-in-law.

Above them, the deafening chop of a Coast Guard rescue helicopter broke through the storm clouds, lowering a bright searchlight into the dark cove.

A rescue basket swung down toward the wet rocks, guided expertly against the fierce ocean wind.

As the paramedics rushed out of the chopper to secure Elena onto a stretcher, Sarah Lin stepped out of the secondary support raft that had just pulled into the cove from the open water.

"We secured the perimeter," Sarah reported, looking down at Chloe before turning her attention to Leah.

"Arthur’s entire digital network has been permanently wiped from the mainframe. Division 7 is officially dead."

Leah stood up, brushing the dirt and mud off her knees.

She watched as her mother was lifted safely into the rescue basket, heading toward a secure federal medical facility where armed guards would stand watch around the clock.

The war was over.

The conspirators were behind bars, the stolen empire was reclaimed, and the shadow syndicate that had poisoned her father was dismantled piece by piece.

Yet as Leah turned to look out over the vast, turbulent ocean stretching endlessly toward the horizon, a profound sense of emptiness washed over her.

She had won every battle, but the victory had cost her everything she thought she knew about family, love, and trust.

Sarah placed a reassuring hand on Leah’s shoulder.

"What’s your next move, Mrs. Vance?" Sarah asked quietly.

Leah stared out at the grey horizon, watching the rescue chopper disappear into the clouds.

"I’m going back to the penthouse," Leah said softly, her voice carrying an absolute, unbreakable resolve.

"It’s time to rebuild Vance Enterprises—on my own terms."
